So our boat came with 6hp 2-stroke (stink pot!) outboard that could result in a mutiny by the family if we continue to run it!

I see plenty of options for 5 and 6hp 4-stroke outboards, but curious if anyone has had any luck with electric outboards? Our plan is something to get us out of the harbor and docking  mostly with the hope of getting us through some lulls while cruising.

Also curious about 4-stroke outboards and if there is a lighter weight version that people have had good luck with? As we all know, it can be a bit awkward hauling that thing over the  transom.

Thanks in advance-

Hi Craig

Nice work on the Washington 360! It was fun to watch you guys. I have a 5 hp four stroke mercury with a torque prop which I’ve been pretty happy with.

BTW we own Three Ring Circus hull #37.
You may want to check the vin # on the right corner of your transom and find the correct hull number for your boat.

Cheers

Hey Craig.

We have the Mercury 3.5 - (4-stroke), you're welcome to take it for a spin.

Looking forward to hearing if anyone has an electric option, like Craig mentioned.

Hi Craig,
It was great following your progress on the WA360 -- congrats on a great race!

I have a nissan/tohatsu (it's all tohatsu under the hood) 4 stroke 6hp (55 lbs) that came with my boat but likewise wanted an electric option for the silence and simplicity it could offer. My primary use cases are also docking in adverse conditions and pushing through lulls when out with my family / getting to the starting line for a race.

Regarding gas power:
I think Tohatsu (again, many  brands are just repackaged tohatsus) 4 strokes are a fine choice.  A used one is pretty easily serviced even if you haven't worked much on outboards before - parts are relatively cheap and easy to get.  For example a new carburetor is something like $30 on amazon. A new pull cord assembly is $40. But all gas powered outboards are a pain in my view.

Regarding Electric:
After some research I bought a Remigo. I've only had it for a few months so I can't give a long-term review but it's been great so far. It gets the boat up to just shy of hull speed in calm water and when maxed out only has 1 hour of battery - but at ~ 1/2 power I get 3 knots and theoretically 4+ hours of battery life. Charging is easy to do onboard or at home and only takes a few hours.

Things I like:
  • Very light (26 lbs) and easy to put on / take off (so light in fact that I have to add weight dead weight onboard to meet the one design spec when racing).
  • Simple controls - I didn't want complex screens and modes.
  • Simple strong design - the body is all aluminum and the battery is integral to the rudderlike shaft.
  • Emergency rudder in a pinch. Not ideal, but it works.
  • It just works. I grew up working on outboards -- I can do it, but it's the last thing I want to be doing when I'm out with my wife and kid.
Things I don't like:
  • It wasn't cheap.
  • More battery life would be good, but what it offers is enough for my limited use cases. Also, supposedly I could connect it by charging cable to other 12V batteries and run it at something like 1/2 speed though I haven't tested that functionality.
Long story short, so far I don't regret getting the Remigo.
I'd be happy to answer any specific questions if that would be helpful.

Best,
Zack
