SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 26 2026 3:00p SPECIAL EVENT!
OAKLAND SOUND PRACTICES is an outdoor sound performance series offering an unconventional circumstance for artists to share emergent and experimental works in conversation with place. With an intent to tread lightly, all presented sound is generated acoustically or through small, portable amplification. Through the assertion of process, and by embracing the unpredictable nature of outdoor environments, the artists of the series depict, in real time, how music is more than simply putting notes and sounds together - it is placing oneself in a specific moment and context, preparing mind and body to shape sound, in community with observers, players and one’s surroundings. It’s a relationship.
This Saturday the series hosts the oakland reductionist orchestra in duo with California redwoods! The performance takes place from 3pm to 4:30pm at Joaquin Miller Park, near the Redwood Glen Trailhead (see map below). A $5-$20 donation is suggested.
The oakland reductionist orchestra is a super group of Bay Area musicians with a predilection for lowercase, fricative, and reductionist improvisation that often sounds more electronic than acoustic. The ensemble comes out of a rich tradition of “American reductionist” music that blossomed in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Many of the members studied at Mills College, which has had an extraordinary and foundational influence on the Bay Area’s new music scene, particularly in experimental, electronic and improvised music and other forms of sound exploration.
