On Friday, July 18 at 8:00 pm, Tom's Place presents
A Friday Improv Salon
(A company-style event: Tom Duff, coordinateur)
featuring
George Rogers (alto sax)
Lorin Benedict (voice)
Tim Duff (bass)
Evelyn Davis (piano)
Martin Kent (drums)
Starting in the 1970s and continuing for twenty years, Derek Bailey
organized annual Company Weeks, at which a varied cast of improvisers
would be asked to play in ad hoc groups on the spur of the moment.
Company Night is the same idea, compressed into a single evening
of short improvisations by spontaneously-formed groups hand-picked
by our coordinateur, who I think will be me.
The Company tonight includes saxophonist George Rogers (currently
based in Notheast Ohio, first place winner in the prestigious
Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition in the jazz category),
Emeryville's own scat singer extraordinaire Lorin Benedict, extremely
local renowned string bassist Tim Duff, pianist Evelyn Davis,
recently of Trio Lantskap Logic (with Fred Frith & Phillip Greenlief)
and, visiting from the Hudson Valley in lower upstate New York,
drummer Martin Kent ("This is an amazing drummer" -George Rogers).
It will be an evening of surprises, not to be missed!
