"Exploring the Intersections: Sexual Violence, Colonialism & Trauma”

When: February 19th 4-6pm

Where: UC Berkeley Multicultural Community Center

Event Description:

There has been an explosion of student activism surrounding sexual violence on our campus. Yet, very little of this student organizing has addressed how multiple systems of power are implicated in the perpetuation of sexual violence. This event seeks to spark conversation at UC Berkeley concerning how racialized violence intersects with sexual violence. In particular, this event focuses on the compounding impacts of racism, colonialism and patriarchy in Native American women’s experiences with sexual violence. One in two Native American women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime; one in three with be raped. This event will foster the intellectual space to explore the political, historical, legal, economic, social and psychological aspects of this violence. This panel will create a collective vision for community healing and societies without violence.

About the Speakers:
Nikki Crowe, an Anishinaabe woman and survivor of childhood sexual abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder, will be giving a talk about issues facing her community including recent changes in state laws, impacts of sexual violence on the Two Spirit community, and the increase of trafficking of women in mining towns.

Marlon Krieger, a documentary photographer and visual storyteller, will be showing portions of his forthcoming documentary concerning the state of violence in American Indian communities today and the role of colonization in these developments.

The event will end with a collaborative dialogue between the speakers and the community concerning resistance strategies on our campus, and ways to build an intersectional movement against sexual violence.
