POSITION SUMMARY :
Under the general direction of the Executive Director and direct supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Outreach and Community Specialist will provide outreach and communication, as well as assist in the facilitation, planning and documentation of "Cultural Competency" trainings, to tribal and non-tribal domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking service providers, and Indian health service programs, throughout California. Additionally, the Outreach and Community Specialist will also be responsible for providing information and outreach to Tribal community members to provide them with information about service programs that exist outside of Indian Country.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Community Outreach and Education: Provide outreach, consistent communication and engagement with tribal and non-tribal domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking service providers, as well as Indian health service programs, with the goal of providing maximum outreach to those victim service providers who have the greatest potential to serve Native American communities. Be readily available to assist and facilitate educational "Cultural Competency" trainings, including but not limited to, facilitation, planning, evaluation and documentation of said trainings.
System Advocacy: Networking and collaboration building amongst tribal and non-tribal domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking service providers, as well as Indian health service programs, with a strong emphasis on enhancing awareness, resources and services for Native American victims. When appropriate, attend regularly scheduled Tribal Council meetings, county-wide Domestic Violence Coordinating Council meetings/committees, Indian Health Service meetings and Law Enforcement briefings or first calls.Documentation: Monthly reporting of project goals, objectives and outcomes as outlined within the programs scope, to be submitted to the Program Coordinator in a timely manner. Documentation should include, but is not limited to, comprehensive notes/minutes, agendas, sign in sheets, as well as contact information and evaluations of community meetings and trainings to non-tribal victim service organizations/agencies and/or collaborative sessions that clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of this project as it relates to meeting the purpose of the grant.
OTHER DUTIES: Maintain daily communication with supervisor per program protocols. Maintain accurate time sheets and other required agency paperwork. Attend Program staff meetings, conference calls and continuing education training if requested. Attend ITCC annual conference meeting and other agency meetings as needed. May require occasional weekend, extended hours and travel, and other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A minimum of three years’ experience working in the field of Family/Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault with Native American communities. High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) – required. Bachelor or Associate of Art Degree preferred, experience may substitute for degree; Two years’ social work, legal, community advocacy, criminal justice, counseling, education, public health or any related experience (applicable volunteer or personal experience will be considered); Demonstrate knowledge of crisis intervention, domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, child abuse and stalking, specifically within Native American communities; Demonstrate knowledge of applicable legal terminology, victim services and resource systems available through tribal, county and state service providers; Ability to establish working relationships with representatives from tribal government, law enforcement, domestic violence and shelter programs, social services, Indian health services, District Attorney’s office and the courts; Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, verbally and in writing; public speaking, teaching or training experience preferred. Must have knowledge of the California Native American culture, history and politics. Maintain a valid, unrestricted California Drivers’ License, vehicle insurance and reliable transportation. If employee has a valid drivers’ license from another state, he/she must obtain a California Drivers’ License within 2 months of hiring date.
Position requires occasional overnight travel within ITCC’s service area.
Requires ability to drive up to 7 hours a day.
Must be available to work occasional weekends, extended hours and have the ability to travel long distances.
This position requires an awareness and keen appreciation of American Indian traditions,
customs and socioeconomic needs and the ability at all times to meet and deal
effectively in contacts with Indian organizations which requires tact, courtesy,
discretion, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling functions of a sensitive
nature.
