What is Reckless Rollers?

Reckless Rollers (RR) is the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls’ recreational skating program.

Who can join Reckless Rollers?

RR is open to female quad skaters over the age of 18. Skaters must be familiar with basic skills, as well as have the ability to participate in practices, utilizing those skills. Skaters who are beginners and are still learning the basics should check out our scheduled "Pre-Rec" classes or other “beginner” boot camps offered by surrounding leagues. We do not have a Pre-Rec class scheduled at this time, but we will post here, on Facebook as well as on our website when the next class is scheduled.

Beginner skaters are otherwise encouraged to practice outside, at local rinks or find an empty tennis court until they are able to join RR. Feel free to network on our site, to find other participants near you.

When is RR practice?

Due to low enrollment, the current session for Reckless Rollers is on Saturday morning, 12 – 2 PM. If membership grows, and we require an additional session, we will discuss adding a Sunday time slot back to RR.

Where is RR practice?

RR skates at the BADG headquarters in West Oakland, Ca.

The address is 2635 Peralta Street, Oakland, CA 94607. We do not offer open practices at this time so only members are allowed. Please be aware of any parking restrictions on Saturday. Please keep personal items out of your vehicle. Bicycles may be parked inside our facility.

How to join RR?

New skaters must register on the first Saturday of the month. You may PRE_REGISTER by emailing RecklessRollers@BayAreaDerbyGirls.com for instruction.

No mid-month registrations are allowed, sorry. Please come 30 minutes early to fill out paperwork if you have not already registered online.

How much does it cost?

RR requires all skaters to be covered under our league’s insurance carrier and the cost is $60* per year. Insurance will be prorated as the year progresses, based on the rate the WFTDA give us. The insurance for 2014 is due by/at your first practice attended. All new skaters must pay this fee. Skaters are strongly encouraged to carry primary medical insurance as ours is supplemental in nature.

USARS insurance is accepted; however you may not pay monthly dues if on USARS.

Monthly dues are $25 – so the first practice you are required to pay $85.00*

Members also may pay a drop-in fee of $10 if they are going to less than 3 practices that month.

Visiting USARS members may skate at any time for a drop in fee of $10 for each visit.

What do else do you need?

All participants must have the following equipment before joining:

Sneakers
Quad roller skates
Kneepads
Elbow pads
Wrist guards
Elbow pads
Helmet
Mouth guard

Most of the pads can be found at any sporting goods store. Skates and pads can be purchased online, or at Cruz Skate Shop in Berkeley.

*Skaters with existing WFTDA insurance can provide their number upon registration. Pro-rated insurance fees will be updated as they occur.

What will we be doing?

Skaters will be covering a variety of skating skills, derby basics, endurance, and off skates conditioning. We will break down skills, talk about the game and have lots of fun while we condition and build endurance. Drills and exercises are modified to meet the skill level of each session. We aim to provide a challenging, yet fun practice each week. Skaters may participate to their own abilities and push themselves as much or as little as they choose.

What about advanced skating?

Stay tuned for announcements about “RecPlus” skating. This program will be for skaters who want to transfer into the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls, and who want to skate more competitively. We will be updating as soon as we have the details available. If you are a skater for a current WFTDA league, please email coaching@bayareaderbygirls.com to inquire about a transfer.
