Statewide Coordinator Job Description

Organizational Overview

Californians United for a Responsible Budget (CURB) is looking for a full-time organizer to run our

statewide campaign to halt the expansion of prisons and jails in California. CURB’s goal are to

shrink the overall size of the California prison system (including the number of prisoners, number of

prisons, and dollars going into the system), and to shift the state’s fiscal and political priorities away

from punishment and toward a new social safety net. For more information about CURB, see:

Core Job Duties

While the Coordinator/Organizer’s focus is on mobilizing our membership to accomplish our goals,

s/he is also ultimately responsible for ensuring that things get done. Core duties include:

Internal Infrastructure

Organize monthly meetings;

Maintain CURB listserve & website;

Serve as primary initial contact for CURB for members, allies, media, funders and other

collaborators;

Organize 2 annual statewide strategy sessions and other gatherings.

Build Alliance Membership and Member Participation

Coordinate the convening of a CURB advisory board;

Coordinate development of a strategy to grow CURB’s membership through outreach to

unions, education, churches, social justice organizations, and other likely and unlikely

allies;

Develop outreach materials;

Maintain regular one-on-one communication with all member organizations.

Statewide and Local Legislative and Policy Campaigns

Coordinate campaigns focused on:

Annual state budget;

Legislative advocacy that addresses prison populations;

Statewide support for local expansion fights;

Support for prisoner rights litigation.

Raise Profile of CURB and CURB’s message

Develop and implement media work to support CURB campaigns and general

opposition to prison expansion;

Represent CURB at convenings, actions, and other public events;

Develop and maintain press contacts;

Develop CURB media spokespeople in key regional media markets.

Fundraising

Support CURB’s fundraising committee.

 

Skills/Qualities

Is self motivated;

Has experience staffing alliances and/or other collaborative projects;

Possesses skills developing and coordinating legislative and policy campaigns;

Has demonstrated fundraising experience (desired but not required);

Is a confident and persuasive speaker in person and on the phone;

Has excellent writing abilities;

Is organized and efficient with ability to manage multiple events and contacts;

Has basic computer experience and is familiar with Microsoft office programs;

Has a driver’s license;

Able to work with people from difference ethnic, racial, gender, political, geographic

backgrounds;

Able and willing to travel;

Fluent in languages in addition to English (desired not required).

Compensation

40 hours per week; $45,000/year. Generous benefits package.

This job will be based in the Bay Area or Los Angeles (preferred) or Fresno and Sacramento.

Location will depend on the fit between the candidate and local CURB support

. Significant travel

will be required. Irregular work on nights and weekends.
