I wanted to make sure you knew about this upcoming event in the Bay Area - we're really excited about it, as the beginning of a series of dialogues between elders, emerging leaders, and all of us about the future of socially engaged Buddhism.

We need a few good volunteers to help with a secret mission, and to help out with welcoming people in to the space. Can you help? Contact me or Katie to get involved!

Looking forward to seeing you there! Forward to folks you know who would be interested!

What's Up With Engaged Buddhism? Part 1: Who Gets To Speak?

In this first installment of an event series, please join us for an "Inverted Q&A" and discussion with actively engaged Buddhists as we dig in to questions around power, authority, and who speaks for movements.

We live in times of great suffering. Imperialism, genocide, gender oppression, ecocide, racism, war, and exploitation of beings remains the status quo.  But we also see signs of hope for collective liberation: from courageous eruptions for justice to slow-simmering healing and transformation.

Rooted in the work of Vietnamese Zen teacher and activist Thich Nhat Hanh, Engaged Buddhism has developed into a diverse worldwide movement of Buddhists and dharma-friendly meditators.  We seek to connect and collaborate with anyone applying spiritual insights to bring about material liberation.

Come and share your insights from your sanghas, spiritual communities, healing work, and justice work. The future of Engaged Buddhism is up to all of us.

This is a dana- or donation-based event, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds! For those who can give financially to support our work, $5 is the suggested donation to cover the costs of the event. If you can give $10, $15, or more, please do!

P.S. We are planning some surprises for this event, and need your help! If you'd like to be part of a secret mission relating to the theme of the evening, please email Katie at klonc...@gmail.com.

P.P.S. To create a safer environment, especially for those with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and chemical injury, we need everyone's help!  Please arrive free of scented products.  Not sure how? Learn more here: http://bpf.org/whats-up-with-engaged-buddhism

Hi BPF,

I love the work that BPF is doing. I took the "U Mad" course and appreciated that as well as all you're doing on the ground in the Bay Area, where I live and practice with a small group of Spiritual Activists connected to San Francisco Insight.

I haven't been using this Google Groups tool to keep up with what you're doing.. .mostly staying informed via Facebook and your web page.  It looks like I need to strengthen ties with this loop as well.

The series "What's Up With Engaged Buddhism" looks very interesting to me, an elder life-long political activist.  I'm regretting that I will still be on the road on the 20th so unable to attend. I have two questions about that. 1) Will there be an opportunity to listen to a recording after the event? 2) Is the posted link correct? (I get the BPF and "page not found" when I click.)

Looking forward to closer connections,
Anita Kline
