Also, if it's helpful for others, when I first unzipped the file, stuffit expander broke it out into separate files and a folder. (Keka did the same until I updated it. after update ok) Simulator could not deal with that format. Apple's built in Archive Manager just broke it out into the pdx file (as did updated keka), which opened fine in Simulator. I'm not sure about other unarchivers, but figured that I'd share this.
StuffIt Expander 16 is an archive management tool that can be used to unzip RAR files, ZIP files, and other formats, including StuffIt archives, which usually require this specific tool (or one of the brand's other archival tools). It supports a huge number of formats and works well natively, although it will struggle with files that are compressed oddly.
StuffIt is a powerful and comprehensive archive manager that offers a number of additional features: it allows you to encrypt your archives, edit the contents of existing archives, create self-extracting archives, schedule backups and various compression tasks, and do many more things. In addition to the proprietary StuffIt SITX format, it supports the already established archive formats, such as ZIP and RAR. This said, the SITX format has a lot of advantages, including better compression levels (which means smaller archives), so you may want to consider using it as the default format for your archives.
The Columbia Appletalk Package (CAP) for UNIX includes these utilities. Although CAP is no longer maintained at Columbia University, it is available at an Australian archive site, together with a number of patches that need to be merged into the source distribution before compilation and installation:
.jar Java ARchive (JAR) files use the same format as info-zip files, and can be read by zip and unzip, as well as by jar. Despite the name Java, they can be used for all kinds of files. The contents are automatically compressed, so such files are reasonably compact (for text contents, typically about a third the size of the original data). The jar command-line interface matches that of tar rather than that of zip and unzip.
