The Xiphos sword was one type of double edged and relatively short weapon used by Greek warriors. It had a blade that was 50 to 60 cm long, quite appropriate for close combat. This short sword has a blade about 60 cm in length. However, the overall length may vary because there are some shorter historical examples. The swords used by the Spartans had a blade around 30 cm in length.

 

Mounting of the sword

 

Intended for one-hand use, the sword had a wooden grip as well as a bronze pommel. Xiphos was carried in scabbards made of wood and featured a crossguard offering added protection so that the user’s hand did not slide onto the blade.
