I've been really intrigued with the concept of creating a job community
as opposed to a traditional job board. With the commoditization of
jobs, it seems targeting a very specific niche and building content
around the jobs instead of the other way around is a smart move.

I touched on this idea back in December
(http://cheesman.typepad.com/seo/2005/12/wanna_beat_goog.html) and
Weddle wrote about it recently as well:

That said, Guy Kawasaki has some interesting insight into this topic:

Any feedback? Good idea, or bad idea? Know any good examples of job
communities and how they're creating significant revenue AROUND job
listings as opposed to exclusively FROM job listings? How vertical can
we go?

Personally I think it has a big place. I only work with retailers, and
whilst they are a massive industry, there are niche's within the niche!
As Guy Kawasaki says, you've got to create something really compelling
and that of course will be the difficult bit.

My view, is that the job advertising should be free and as Joel
comments, somehow build content around the jobs. Imagine if job
seekers would actually pay to only get the content they wanted! And
employers would pay you for less quantity, and better quality of
applicants.

Well, hope that's useful!?

I think that candidates paying to receive listings and employers posting for
free is called TheLadders.com.

One has to be careful of this in the UK as the employment agencies act
prevent you from charging job seekers for finding them a job. Naturally the
law has not kept pace with the internet as many sites already do this by
using a reverse sms model.
