SPOILERS obviously so don't read past this if you don't want to ruin it
for yourself :)

I could take it two ways: One, they were trying to do a McCarthy/"I
SAW GOODY ADAMA WITH THE DEVIL!!!" type of episode which would be
pretty...blah. But the other option is they were trying to highlight
the command structure, the necessity of the "hard choices" etc, which
is kinda how I took it.

Definitely am looking forward to seeing the Chief turn on Boomer (I
mean, he has to now, right?).

Your thoughts?

I'll admit I've read most of the spoilers for this season and am still
enjoying how the show is playing out.

I appreciate that they are taking the time to lay a deep foundation
for the show, rather than razzle dazzle every week with stunt casting
and lame stand-alone stories....like the original series did.

I think they have to be mindful of how they setup the religous aspects
of the show.

You won't find "popcorn" casting in cable shows because there is no
advantage for the "star" name to do these shows. Now that they can be
nominated for "Guest star" roles and get Emmys on Network shows this is
where they get to show their stuff and get rewarded. Even a nomination
is great for them. Network casting thrives on this whereas cable is
really opening the door for new and less well known actors to get a
shot that they can't get on netowrk. Always remember it about ratings
on Network (not cable) and $$$$, not about acting. There are many
people in this business that you see every week or every year but there
are FEW actors. I like the writing on this version very much!

The more I rewatch the shows I have on DVR, the more I realize there
is less and less connection to the old series. I mean that in a
production and creative context.

It has been nice seeing them take their time in developing the story.
I hope we see a full 20 plus shows for next season, in addition to the
8 new additions to this season.

I think it will do as well as Stargate and First Wave because it IS
cable. They have plenty of time and really don't care much about the
numbers. They new line up kind of secures them a decent number. In
cable they don't buy 20 shows they buy "six packs" which is 6 shows at
a time, just in case something happens. If they buy 20 then there is
too much contractual money to pay if the show goes under. They don't
pay them they same kind of money they would make on Network, maybe a
third if they come with Olmos resume and the rest get maybe $500 over
scale. It is slightly better than working for PBS which is scale only!

If I had been them, I'd really want some decent royalty details in my
contract, but I'm not sure if SAG is controlling that these days, its
been a long-long time since I've seen any paperwork on such things.

It is something I think works against the idea of having Pegasus on
the show. With the original, and given that it was Universal that
produced it, you could get away with using the same set with no
changes. Here that becomes harder with all of the specific details
about Galactica, IE the corded phones, etc. You'd have to sell the
idea that Pegasus is nearly as old as Galactica. I suppose with some
tweaks here and there you could do it easily enough.

Do they film in Canada or am I just guessing that?

Residuals are predetermined with every basic contract renewal every 3
years and SAG still does them but they are 2 years behind on Reruns!
While the actors they claim to care so much about are starving, they
sit there with their cushie jobs and chat on personal calls and put
out as little paper work as possible.
Universal doesn't have the sets any longer some bits and pieces may
still be around but not much. I think it is made in Canada too but I
know it is not shot here (LA) I haven't checked the roster to see.
The one thing I like is that in general they are all fresh NEW faces
some are GOOD and some are OK but at least they are NEW. With SFX being
so common place now the show cost far less than the original which was
close to a million an episode. When you saw the what was coming up on
the next show they were dailies that had been cut for that purpose.
Larson gets a card on this new one which means he is making $1500-2000
every time they flash that card along with some other perks. He a tough
cookie to work for.

I hate doing it, but until I get all their names committed, I'm going
to use the actors character names.

I haven't lived out in LA since a few weeks after Fox pulled the stunt
with the Hollywood sign. (brownie points for whomever knows what that
means.) But back here in the NW part of Ohio, we get CBC with basic
cable. (you can also get away with using Canadian coins, but don't
try it south of Findlay, Ohio or folks give you strange looks) I've
seen Col. Tigh on several shows. I do think the talent from up north
is a nice breath of fresh air, but not all of it is as strong as
others. Boomer is an example of a weak link for example. She
delivers some lines such that I want to cringe.

The CG shots for this show aren't what I'd call movie-grade, but they
are good. The state of the art is really expanding the limits of what
you can do with a budget. Its hard to watch the original and think
that it was as expensive as it was back then. You couldn't get away
with the use of the back lots, and various locations around LA that
the original used now.

I wonder if BSG is showing in Japan, and if so, what the ratings are.

I think the casting really is the core of what has made the show
connect with audiences. Like the original star trek, as much as their
might be FX, it really is a story-driven show that must have solid
acting to bring it all home. However long the show runs, I have to
think it is going to really launch the state-side careers of several
actors in particular. Not that most haven't had their share of work
in the US, but this will certainly boost interest in them.

I also really like the attention to certain kinds of details. During
Flesh and Blood, how the Marines handled their weapons while covering
the Cylon, and as people walked in front of them, or as two were
pulling him off of Starbuck. The way the crews of different ships
have differing styles of uniforms. Mundane details, most folks miss
them, or if they do notice, don't realize somebody really is taking
the time to get it done right.

The show has an almost Tom Clancy-like feel to it. The mini-series
was like Red Storm Rising-in space.

Its just nice to see a show being done WELL, with good production
values. I am curious if there are any connections to the production
staff/crew/FX types on Space Above and Beyond.

I couldn't agree more!! I'm absolutely in love with this show and the
acting - except for Boomer. And of course, since she's our least fave
- we get to watch her in 2 story lines....LOL

Any guesses on what's gonna happen to Hilo? (or should I start another thread?)
