The concordance is an alphabetical index of all the words from the Bible. Each word is displayed in the line of the verse in which it is contained. This will help you find and compare the words and phrases within any verse.

It was in the last decade of the nineteenth cent. that the two most complete concordances were issued, but these were preceded by two smaller but valuable works, one by the distinguished Bible scholar, John Eadie (1810-1876), An Analytical Concordance to the Holy Scriptures (London, 1857).

In 1873 appeared the first ed. of the largest concordance of the Bible that had thus far appeared, by Robert Young (1822-1888). The Analytical Concordance to the Bible on an entirely new plan, containing every word in alphabetical order, arranged under its Hebrew or Greek original, with the literal meaning of each, and its pronunciation, with the latest information on Biblical Geography, Antiquities. This work of 311,000 references often has been revised and reprinted. Six eds. were called for within twenty years.

Many attempts have been made to construct concordances to the Douay VS but the definitive work, which will not have to be done again, is the Complete Concordance to the Bible (Douay Version), 1953, a work by Newton Thompson and Raymond Stock.

In addition to these separately published concordances, a number of very valuable compilations of this kind have appeared from time to time in books devoted to Bible study, semi-Bible dictionaries, etc. Possibly the best known of the earlier attempts is the one by William Wright, The Illustrated Bible Treasury and a New Concordance to the Authorized and Revised Versions.

Strong's Numbers come from a reference book known as "Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible." A concordance is an alphabetical list of words and definitions just like a dictionary except they only apply to one book, which in our case the King James Bible.

Each word in the concordance links to an English definition in an exchange of concepts that helps you understand not just the definition but in many cases, the cultural context from which the word originated.

Formatted as a dictionary, its topics range from people and cultures to religious terms. As a concordance, it also includes places and events keyed to verse in the King James Bible. From Abraham to Jerusalem, and from Frankincense to Queen Jezebel, this dictionary can help you learn about and truly understand the people and terms used in the Bible.

Bible concordances are helpful for everyone interested in the Bible, from scholars to students to Bible study enthusiasts. Concordances can help you mine Scripture for more profound insights you otherwise would not have access to. Many Christians find that using a concordance transforms their Bible study. It did for me.

Most Bible publishers include a concise concordance in the back of at least some of their Bible editions. Some editions even boast extensive concordances. Separate, more exhaustive concordances are helpful for more in-depth study.

Topical concordances classify passages of Scripture by subject rather than by the use of specific words. The Holman Concise Topical Concordance, for example, contains more than six thousand such topical headings listed in alphabetical order accompanied by more than a hundred thousand Scripture references.

Analytical concordances like An Analytical Concordance to the Holy Scriptures arrange the entire Bible topically. They are still a concordance of words, but Scripture references are ordered by subject and grouped under headings and subheadings that help readers see the internal connection of topics within Scripture.
