Wework across five botanical gardens and throughout the tropics to grow a brighter tomorrow for plants and all they sustain. We do so through a biocultural approach, where Indigenous knowledge, community priorities, and scientific research guide our path forward. Together, we will restore flourishing relationships between plants, people, and places.

DIACRITICALS

National Tropical Botanical Garden is headquartered on the island of Kauai in Hawaii and recognizes the use of diacritical markings of the modern Hawaiian language including the ʻokina [ ʻ ] or glottal stop and the kahakō [ō] or macron. However, we have omitted these markings throughout our website to ensure the best online experience for our local, national and international users. Per our mission, NTBG is committed to perpetuating the survival of cultural knowledge and recognizes the importance of using these markings to preserve the language and culture of Hawaii. We respectfully use diacriticals in all of our printed communication beyond the online platform.

The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden attracts photographers, gardeners, scientists, and nature lovers from around the world. We offer over a mile of trails lined with thousands of rare and endangered flora from all parts of the globe. It is a magical place where paths and bridges guide you over mountain-fed streams and waterfalls into awe-inspiring views of Onomea Bay along the beautiful Hamakua Coast.

My goal was to create a garden of hardy tropical-looking plants, with colorful flowers and/or big, bountiful foliage. The first summer, I laid the foundations with three Windmill Palms and a wall of bamboo alongside one fence. Colorful canna lillies and big foliage gave an inkling of what was to come.

But it is Washington State and there are winters and in the winter it can snow. The palms and bamboo bent low under the weight of the snow, but they survived. The tiki torch looked distinctly unhappy with the weather, possibly jealous of those lucky plants that were moved indoors for the winter.

What a treat this post is, Graham! Thanks for showcasing your beautiful first tropical garden! It looks amazing and I love all the photos, especially the casual cat in garden paradise ? And how come that banana leaf is so colourful?! Wonderful. And the tiki torch reminds me of myself, over here, covered in snow!

Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden (Thai: สวนนงนุชพัทยา), also called Nongnooch Pattaya Garden, is a 500-acre (2.0 km2) botanical garden and tourist attraction in Chonburi Province, Thailand. Located on Sukhumvit road, it can be reached via bus, taxi or private land transportation. It is also a major scientific center dedicated to cycads, with its own Cycad Gene Bank.

In 1954, Pisit and Nongnooch Tansacha purchased 1,500 rai of land on the garden's modern location. The couple had originally planned to use the land as a fruit location for several foreign and native fruits, including coconuts, mangoes, and oranges. However, Nongnooch decided to turn the land into a tropical garden after being inspired by a trip abroad.[2]

From 1996 to 1997, Kampon expanded the garden's lakes and the soil dug up was placed in a valley which was initially used as a sunflower field. Eventually, Kampon decided to turn the area in the French Gardens based on the Gardens of Versailles, which opened in 1998.[3]

Designed by Kampon Tansacha, the Garden in the Sky displays several plants, including ferns, cacti, bromeliad, orchids, agave, cycads, croton, bonsai and aglaonema, on an elevated level from the ground, with some plants being hanged from the roof. The area consists of two levels, a LED system to assist the plants in photosynthesis, and a spray system to water the plants.[5]

In between the French Garden 1 and Thai pavilion are located the nine prayer flags of Bhutan, which were gifted to the garden by the Embassy of Bhutan in 2018. The flags are replaced every 6 months due them fading, and a ceremony is held everytime the new flags are handed to Nong Nooch by the Bhutanese embassy.[4]

In 2016, Kampon Tansacha orderred the molding of the first dinosaur model in the garden, a Triceratops, which was then placed in the Cactus Garden, whose popularity among tourists caused the garden to construct a section dedicated to dinosaur models. Construction on the section began in 2016 and opened on 10 April 2017.[7][1] More than 180 replicas of different dinosaur genera.[8]

The garden contains a replica of Stonehenge and was built in 2000.[1] The stones used in the replica were purchased by Kampon from Prachinburi province and includes an engravement dedicated to Nongnooch.[9]
