For some reason cleaner does not launch on my Mac anymore. I'm running macOS Sonoma 14.0 (but it happened as well under macOS 13.x) and ccleaner 2.9
I tried to uninstall and reinstall the software several times but the problem persists.

I've used CCleaner Pro for many years w/o a problem!! This morning on my on my MacBook Air i up graded the software to "Sonoma 14.0" and CCleaner will not launch! Having tried all I know to do I deleted CCleaner........

The latest release for CCleaner for Mac, version 2.09, was released just last week ( -mac/version-history) but the day before the MacOS 14 release. I would expect them to have a Sonoma-friendly release and/or patch in the near future.

Hi All,
We have just released an update to CCleaner Mac that should resolve this issue with MacOS Sonoma.
Please update to the latest version of CCleaner Mac, 2.9.187 and let me know if it resolves the issue for you.

Hi. I don't like automatic updates, so I keep this option unchecked in my CCleaner options, so that it doesn't automatically update. If I want to update, I do it manually and carry out a manual check. I last updated CCleaner on 21/06/23 which installed the latest version from 14/06/23 v6 13.10517. I have not updated CCleaner since and when I carry out a manual check, I see that I have the latest version installed.

I am bit surprised, and concerned, why CCleaner has suddenly altered on my computer. Suddenly, today, for no reason, a new screen has appeared when I select Custom Clean. A new page displays saying 'Welcome Back to CCleaner' with options to analyse or run the cleaner. Other options also load up and appear on the side. (Attached is a screen print to show what it looks like) Other than being annoying, this new feature has only appeared suddenly today. But I haven't updated CCleaner and apparently have the latest version, so why would this new screen suddenly appear? Has CCleaner installed something in the background without my knowledge?

Of course it's only the haters who will shout about it on fora, with a few 'me too's' from the don't minds, and so reactions can look skewed.
There could be, probably are, may more don't minds or likes, but you don't see them shouting about it.

The funny thing is that everybody quickly gets familiar with the change, so that if/when it comes to change again in a few years then they shout about that new change too.
(And it's usually the same people doing the shouting, many people prefer what's familiar and just don't like any change).

PS. Personally I'm not too keen on the new welcome screen either, but like the many other UI changes that have happened in the past I'll soon get used to it.
Nothing functional has changed, it's only a UI screen.

The shouting that we are currently seeing on the forum is something that we see everytime something changes in the CCleaner screens/layout.
It usually dies down in a week or so as users get familiar with the change.

It is a bit odd that they have activated this front end screen change in the way that they have, and didn't wait for a version update.
That's caught everyone by surprise and probably resulted in more shouting than we usually see for a change.

I don't care much for the new screen either, it's also my opinion that it's an unnecessary change as it has been done.
(But things do change for no particular reason. I can also see that it might be a partial first step to something else, maybe testing ideas).

I use CCleaner Free Portable and only use the Custom Clean feature (I don't like all the unnecessary bloat like Health Check, Performance Optimizer, etc. that's been added to CCleaner in the past few years) so the only four files I keep after I unzip the latest ccsetup6xx.zip file are shown below. Note that ccleaner.ini is manually copied over from my previous CCleaner version to retain my custom settings.

However, the new startup screen appears to be designed for the installed version of CCleaner Pro and throws an error if I select a feature in the Get More With CCleaner panel (e.g., Performance Optimizer, Disk Analyzer) that isn't included in my edition of CCleaner Free.

If I run CCleaner portable on a machine with no CCleaner installed then the first time I run it I do not get the Welcome screen.
However if I close it and run again I then do get the the Welcome screen, and testing I get same as you,

The PO screen opens but if you actually try to run it then you get the error.
PO needs to monitor things so has to be installed to do that, it can't work with the Portable because it is not installed.
Which is why PO isn't in the sidebar of the Portable.

I agree though that it shouldn't be shown on the Welcome screen in the Portable, or should be disabled from use there in the portable.
It looks like an oversight on the developers part. Not that surprising, as they don't seem to consider the Portable much anymore.

Hi!

I cant remove this app. Its always open. I kill the process it restarts itself within no time and therefore i cant put it into trash. It autostarts when i reboot my Mac eventho it is neither in the launchagents folder or in the normal auutostart list. It behaves like mal/spyware. Really not cool.

So killing process from Terminal does not work either. The Process from which it starts is launchd, which is crucial for the OS to work.

Edit: I found a solution via Terminal ccleaner can be removed from launchd. Type this into Terminal: launchctl remove com.piriform.CCleaner

Hi @SherlockThanks for the updates on this situation as I am delighted to hear that you were able to remove CCleaner via the terminal command, although I am terribly sorry for any trouble this may have caused to you.

Thanks for sharing this terminal trick

I was infuriated when I realised I couldn't remove CCleaner on my new Macbook because the process would not terminate and just start itself again, so I couldn't remove the software from the applications folder. I wanted to install version 1.18 again.

This is the definition of a malicious piece of software. What the hell happened. I really miss CC v1

If I do a clean reinstall of my OS, which I really need, would this solve the CCleaner uninstall issue? I am in my 90th year, so these things aren't as simple as they might be. With all the extra fuel cost increases, I really can't afford the luxury of CC.

Most people here on the forum are strictly against any such app, as they can "clean" things they shouldn't, plus slow down your system. If you insist on using it, make sure you backup immediately before using it so you can revert back to the state previous to using ccleaner if things go badly.

It also happens in Safari on iOS. But a 0 byte cookie is only unsightly; it contains no data, and is not harmful. Cookies in general are not a bad thing. From our very own TR: -myth-of-the-dangerous-cookie/

Agree with tjk and Malwarebytes; would not recommend running CCleaner. CCleaner, if not configured precisely and specifically for minimal impact, can and will run through your operating systems and trash critical plists, other Library files, and wreak unmitigated mayhem on your system. Not fun.

I never paid any attention to them until a couple of threads sprung up here. I have far more interesting things to do with my time than worry about 0 byte cookies. I don't understand all the anxiety.

zombie cookies are cookies embedded within adobe flash.. You delete them as you would any other cookie and they come right back. Hence the name zombies. They are very difficult to kill or get rid of. My purpose of using the ccleaner app is just to eliminate my zombies, not to mess with anything else. I [to quote the Beatles" keep a clean machine with a little help from Mac Pro."

I am willing to waste my time on any intrusions into my affairs. Advertising is a necessary activity in life however there must be some resistance to constant barrage of nefarious , sneaky manipulation tactics that the advertising industry employ. Many pop ups that appear are a result of zombies lurking in my machine .I employ an ad blocker and that helps a lot . I want my machine to be clean. Die Zombies. Leave me to my life.

I do not want to do anything except install it, and use that section and I wonder if the simple act of installing could still cause a problem. These Zombies are on my kill list and I will rid them one way or another.

CCleaner can ferret out stuff & get rid of it, but could cause a problem. It was for years only a Windows program. If you're bound and determined to go zombie hunting, make a backup, install CCleaner, hunt the zombies, restart your Mac, and test things out. At least have a way to get back to a working operating system if CCleaner torpedoes any boot / system files --- ouch... Or, backup & dig into the Library (option -> Go to expose Library in Finder), go zombie hunting that way. Or if you're familiar with terminal, poke around with the command line (backup before doing anything). Good luck!

Thank you that is good advice.& I shall follow it. I know where the zombie lair is , buried in flash storage. I've been in there and found them but could not kill them. You have to go on Adobe ,on line, where they have an interactive site that takes you right to them where you are suppose to be able to set up a gate or barrier for who gets in and who is banned and eliminate the ones that don't belong. Still they would not die.
