The psicon.dll is a "shell extention". That is, it allows explorer to do something it normally couldn't, which is, view little icons that contained the actual image inside a psd file. While most people ran it without problems, many people lost work because of a "can't save because file is open" error that happened when explorer was open to a folder where a file they were working on resided. So as explorer was trying to update the little icon the user was trying to save the file and a contention occurred.
Consequently, Adobe stopped including the .dll file after PS7.
I guess to be sure you don't lose any files, just be sure to not have a folder containing PSD files open via Explorer when working on it/them :)
In fact, I'm just going to test this now......

This worked on half of my psd files. The ones it didn't work with I had to go in and make the locked background layer into a regular layer, Save it.
Then it worked. Strange

Steve. Not trying to abuse the services of flickr. I am writing here as I've scoured the net and can't find a forum discussing cloning issues. I thought if anyone knows of a relevant forum perhaps you might.
The problem is that Maxtor Maxblast 5, a cloning software, should but usually doesn't clone a bootable hard drive (slave of same make and size as master).
Can you suggest an active forum (which does not charge to join) that can tell me how I might solve this problem of making clones bootable?
Sorry again for being off topic.

I installed these dll files and reg entries in cs3 with vista they didnot work until i rebooted the system now all is well.... one note i didnot run them as administrator even tho i am logged in as administrator. that might make a difference as to when you can see the psd photos...

Thanks Steve. It just worked! I have XP. I had to restart the computer. I was working with Ps7. I didn't know that I wasn't going to be able to see .psd thumbnails so I deleted it. I had several folders with .psd files only and I couldn't see what they were anymore. This helped a lot because I couldn't reinstall Ps7. I was getting error messages. I could see them in Bridge... but I couldn't see pictures samples of image files that were inside folders.
The only problem that I have now is that the other image files would not open on CS4 when I click on them. They open with windows picture and fax viewer. I tried to change that going to the image properties and adding Ps to the list of programs but it doesn't do it. The only way they open is searching for them in Ps. They won't open with Bridge either.

Thanks for confirming it works with Vista :-)
The Windows picture and fax viewer is the default for JPEGS. When you double click a JPEG wherever it is on your computer, you want it to open inside Photoshop instead ?
I've just tried to associate JPEG(JPG) files to open in CS4 but can't find a way.
CS4 will open, but no image file.
Seems to be an issue with CS4 as they can be set to open in other versions........
But I hate my JPEGS opening anywhere except the picture and fax viewer. Mainly because I don't want whatever program has ingratiated itself into the permissions list to open a photo, when all I want is to take a quick peek ;-)
To make it so that when double clicking a JPEG file inside Bridge to open in CS4, open Bridge. Go to Edit > Preferences > File Type Associations and scroll down to the JPEG entry. Click on the currently selected application and from the drop down, click on Adobe Photoshop CS4.
Click OK.
You're welcome Frank :-)
Maybe you should have used more descriptive names for the PSD files before this ;-))

I can confirm this works in Vista x64.
I placed the dll files at both file folders (program files and program files x32). I review the registry editor and it points only to program files which is the x64 file's folder.
So opening the conventional explorer (which is x64) the pdf files display correctly. I tested an explorer x32 which did not display corrctly the files, but creating different entries pointing to the shell folder at program files (x32) works like a charm. An extra step not really necessary since the explorer in Vista x64 is only 64 bits not having the x32 countrapart as with the IE.

I have Vista x64 and Photoshop CS3. I downloaded PSICON.dll and carefully followed instructions above. It did not work. The only difference from above was when I double tapped the psicon. dll reg I was aked to to select Run, which I did, and it gave me a note pad with what looks like registration data. Should I copy/paste this to the Reg - if so , how? Thanks

This is quite an old thread but just shows the value of re-visiting them. I never knew about this option until the thread was resurrected again and really appreciate it thanks.
I wonder how many other valuable nuggets of information are lost because threads have gone cold.
Is there any value in someone of great knowledge creating a "Did you know you can..." type of sticky thread for these things?

I did follow the instructions. The download gave me the two psicon.dll files, as well as the two aaiicon.dll files. None had a .reg extension at the end of the file name. By opening properties they were identified as file Type "Registration Entries" and "Application Extension". The application file showed a creation date of 12/13/2005, and the Registration file shows a modified date of 7/18/2005.
The "Application Extension" file was copy/pastied from the desk top to the the Shell folder I created in the "Program File (x86)". The "Program Files" folder had no Adobe folder so I put nothing there.
I did not move the"Registration Entries" into the Shell folder.
I double clicked the psicon.dell (file type "Registration Entries") and the the "Run" message came up. I selected Run and then saw the Note Pad with data. The text in the Note Pad starts with "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs]...etc.
Apparently nothing got to the registry - in any event it did not work.
Can you help?

Oh my God man! Sweet Jesus. This is all very helpful, but now I'm reminded why I bought a MAC. I have PCs and a MAC for my business, but I'll tell you, if you're into photography and photoshop, MAC is really the shizzz.

Stevekin, Thanks so much. Worked like a charm.
I have CS3 on Vista. I had to make a new folder like you said and didn't have to reboot. I also was real tired of looking at those blue icons and didn't know why I couldn't see a thumbnail. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
aside from this: There were some other questions I was looking for answers to in the archives and they were dead or didn't answer the question at all.

It's nice to see the pics instead of icons again, isn't it :)
If you have queries that other threads seem to deal with to some degree, by all means add to the thread to revive it.
If the discussion is locked, but you think you have something relevant, let either myself, Tennessee Gator or any of the mods know and we can see about reopening it/them.
If, however, you have searched and cannot find an answer, then go right ahead and open a new discussion with your query :)

Well, I'm with you in this one. I just posted since someone asked for some help; I madfe it work easily 3 months ago, but it looks that after each Vista update (which are almost everyday) something happen in my PC and the thumbnails go wrong (while in a different PC I monitor all is fine). I have now ACDsee Photo Manager mostly to see the CR2 files but it is slow...
So, in all honesty, the way I'm working now is via folders by date, I keep a jpg from camera, the raw file and watherever other file format I work with (tiff, psd, etc) and I keep always the same name with little variations, so for a fast check, I open the usual explorer and rely only in the jpg and the names I give to the files.
Needing a different browser only slows me down and take some valuable memory...

jfdpI686 - Wow ! Thanks for all of the help. As you pointed out, it appears my problem with the psicon.dll download is my inability to see the extension of the files (for reasons I know not why). My new Vista x64 seems to dislike a lot of things#@**. So I give up on trying to see PSD icons in Windows. I should have known better than to get Vista but...I'm just going to have to learn new habits and use Adobe Bridge.

Lew, not all is lost, as stated in the tutorial just before step 1, the problem is your folder settings, once you're able to see file extensions tou'll be fine.
I would suggest the better route of a planned archive and file name flow. If you shot raw+jpg then my method could work for you.
Vista is the only x64 solution for most people due drivers and support. I tried XP x64, familiarity with the x32 was almost perfect until getting drivers. So Vista, as usual was forced to us.
But in the other hand, if you're using more than 4Gb ram, then for photoshop is a dream, I now only use PS x64 with Topaz Labs plugins and Noise Ninja and I am a happy camper; it's only matter to find the right balance of ram management and you'll love that.

RAW thumbnails are preview via codecs.
I'm a Canon shoter so I can say to go to Canon website, pick your camera model click drivers and downloads, select your OS, and download the "Canon RAW Codec" and install it.
Canon is not being friendly with x64 OS since they haven't update the codecs for Vista or XP x64 but you'll be fine with x32 systems.
The only way for 64 bit systems is to buy the codecs from a third party.
