So I'll be 69 years old next month.  I've noticed that my 3/4 size Kay has gotten noticeably heavier over the last year or so.  My abdominal muscles are starting to complain when I pick it up, especially when I have to hold it out from my body to put it in the car.  My doctor said I could try some age-appropriate exercises to strengthen my abs.  He also mentioned a supplement called Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) which is supposed to strengthen muscles generally.

I'd be interested to hear about your own experiences and any thoughts, suggestions, or recommendations you may have.  Any "age-appropriate" exercises you may know of would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

Reading the Wikipedia entry on the subject puts in question the rôle of statins in reducing muscle.
At 71 I've been taking them for 10, maybe 15 years.

I will need to ask why - cost benefit.
I don't expect to live forever. I am, though, terrified of a stroke.

I suspect that lying down and thinking about situps would do the world of good. :-)

Good luck and keep thumping.

Although I am a huge fan of Perry's theory of laying down and contemplating exercising, I have found that the best exercise in the world is simple continuing to haul around a bass fiddle!  (On and off stage!)

CoQ10 is sort of "in" right now for all sorts of reasons - everything from heart disease to bad gums to low sperm count.  I personally take it as part of a cocktail of vitamins and supplements my neurologist put me on and they work - so that's good enough for me.

My suggestion would be to buy them on Amazon so you get a better price.  And make sure you take the correct dosage.  Talk to your doctor about that.

Seriously though on the exercise thing.  Remember your body mechanics.  Get a cart.  Ask for assistance in loading and unloading.  Age happens.  Adjustments are necessary and nothing to be ashamed of.

I have been using this case for the last year and a half.

I bought it because of the wheels (which do help) but what's been more helpful is the abundance of handles in multiple useful places on the case. It's well padded.

I do miss having my minivan, where the back gate was lower to the ground and made it easier to lift the bass onto the floor. But I can put it in my Highlander. I never turn down assistance but if it's not available I can make it work - it's just not pretty to watch.

One thing that's helped me a lot (to be clear I'm just starting this journey of 'why does this crap hurt TODAY, WHY are my eyes broken, etc' at the age of 46) is weight lifting.

Start slow -- you're not really wanting endurance lifting but building a bit of mass.  It hurt like $&)/@& the first few weeks but feeling better than I've been in a long while.

Ten sets of basically max you can go repeated twice, two to three times a week mostly upper body and squats with some sit ups till it hurts.

Other option: roadies.  But this is Bluegrass here so....
