I think you were right, Rob.
Take care of your bass and it will take care of you.

Best regards to all,
BA

Hi all--

My wife and I often play together at historical sites. Today we performed in a 19th Century log cabin. We were asked to set up about six feet in front of the hearth in a room that had a lively fire going in the fireplace. (The room was pretty small, so moving farther away was not an option.) I was afraid of possible damage to my bass from the heat of the fire a scant two yards away, so I asked that we be located in another room. Was I right to be concerned? Could the heat have melted glue or caused other problems? Or was I being overly cautious?

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

If it's too hot for you, it's not great for the bass.
Good luck

Perry has a good rule of thumb. If you stand between the bass and the fire, you'll know. The first damage would be to the finish, hide glue does very well with dry heat (not with hot moisture though).  I'd also be careful if you brought the bass in from a cold outside, let it warm up in the bass bag for a while in a distant corner.. to prevent finish checking.

That especially applies if you have a cheap Chinese bass like I do. Mine is glued together with white glue (like Elmer's) and a few years ago the neck pulled off over the course of a few weeks during a summer hot spell. It was poorly fit and they had simply filled the gap with glue. It is now bolted and glued with hide glue and sounds better than ever but it was a stressful experience at the time,
