Chapter 7, 'Kripke on Epistemic and Metaphysical Possibility: Two Routes to the Necessary A Posteriori,' discusses Kripke's arguments for the existence of a posteriori necessities. One route goes through arguments for essentialism: i.e., the claim that there are properties such that objects necessarily have them if they have them. Such conditionals, if true, are true a priori, whereas the claim that an object or kind of object has such a property can be a posteriori. Soames distinguishes between this argument from essentialism and an argument from name-name identities (p. 176). According to the latter, the claim that Hesperus is Phosphorus is a posteriori, even though, self-identity being an essential property, it is also necessarily true. The question is how well the supposed a posteriori status of this proposition lies with Kripke's 'Millianism' about names.

This argument does seem to show that our knowledge that Hesperus is Phosphorus is a posteriori, even though what we know is necessarily true. However, Soames' version of it is somewhat more complicated, going through some meta-linguistic premises with which he finds fault (pp. 177-78). Kripke's 'Millian' semantics of names holds that their semantic contribution is determined directly by their reference, rather than indirectly by a conventionally assigned condition that an object has to satisfy to be the referent of the name. But now if we combine Millianism with the Russellian view of propositions ("Millian/Russellianism" -- p. 188) the claim that the proposition that Hesperus is Phosphorus is a posteriori becomes problematic, since it is the same proposition as the proposition that Hesperus is Hesperus, which (subject to the usual existence assumption) is a priori.

The analytic movements of the early 20th century remain fascinating not just for 'internalist' history of philosophy, but also for the intellectual history of that century. A kind of after-glow remains, in which the philosophy of language is thought to have a special foundational role for philosophy, even though its critical, anti-philosophical impetus has disappeared. Perhaps this after-glow still colours what we call 'analytic philosophy'. But (so at least it currently seems) the great dissolution of philosophy has in the end left the problems and practice of philosophy remarkably untouched.

If no color support is available, then false is returned by default, unless the alwaysReturn flag is set to true. This is so that thesimple question of "can I use colors or not" can treat any truthyreturn as "yes".

Thank you, Ashley, and good afternoon, everyone. It continues to be a dynamic environment. While revenue and EPS finished within our range of guidance, both were impacted by a $6 million negative true-up for lower-than-estimated unit shipments in our foundational audio technologies. As we discussed last quarter, we are seeing year-over-year declines for foundational audio coming off of tough comps, and now issues with the supply chain.

Total revenue in the first quarter of $352 million was in the range we provided and included a negative true-up of about $6 million for Q4 2021 shipments reported that were below the original estimate. The negative true-up was primarily in foundational revenue in our gaming and consumer electronics markets. On a year-over-year basis, first quarter revenue was about $38 million below last year's Q1 as we benefited from a $21 million true-up in Q1 2021, which is a $6 million negative true-up in Q1 2022, and the prior year also benefited from timing of revenues under contract. These factors were partially offset by higher adoption of Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, and imaging patents within our fiscal Q1 of 2022.

Q1 revenue was comprised of $332.3 million in licensing and $19.3 million in products and services. Let's get into the year-over-year trends in licensing revenue by end market. Broadcast represented 37% of total licensing in fiscal Q1. Broadcast revenues declined by about $18 million or 13% from the prior-year Q1 due to timing of revenue and a larger true-up in the prior year and lower recoveries.

Consumer electronics represented about 17% of total licensing in fiscal Q1. On a year-over-year basis, Q1 CE licensing increased by approximately $6 million or 11%, driven by higher foundational audio revenues for DMAs and soundbars, as well as higher recoveries. We also saw growth from higher adoption of Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision across CE devices. These favorable factors were partially offset by the large true-up in the prior year.

It's a couple of things, Steve. We did -- as you can see from our true down, see some lower unit shipments than what we were expecting, and that did flow through to Q1 estimates. We are also seeing strength in Vision, Atmos, imaging patents, those newer areas, and that tends to come in over time. So that is one of the factors in how the year looks.

A formula is true at a context \(c\) in a structure \(M\)iff: the formula is true with respect to \(c\) and the time andworld of \(c\) in \(M\). A formula is valid iff: forevery structure \(M\), and every context \(c\) of \(M\),the formula is true at \(c\) in \(M\). Kaplan says that thenotion of logical consequence can be defined in any of the usualways.

We fail to see how the evidence relied upon by the dissent demonstrates that Shealy's interests in his lake were actually, or in imminent threat of being, injured. The fact that Gaston Copper is "fouling" Lake Watson simply does not establish that Shealy's lake is actually, or in imminent threat of being, injured. This is true even though DHEC stated that "runoff" flowed from Boggy Branch to Bull Swamp Creek and into the Edisto River. DHEC's statement simply does not establish that pollutants actually reached, or will imminently reach, Shealy's lake. Further, the fact that DHEC tested Shealy's lake in 1990 and found pollutants in the lake does not establish that Shealy's interests in his lake were actually, or in imminent threat of being, injured. The dissent again relies on the stipulation that water flows from Boggy Branch to Bull Swamp Creek and into the Edisto River. However, no evidence was admitted that the pollutants found in Shealy's lake by DHEC in 1990 were traceable to Gaston Copper's predecessor. Thus, the DHEC 1990 test does not suggest, nor let alone prove, that Gaston Copper's discharges after 1991 actually injured, or will imminently injure, Shealy's lake.
