There is something perfectly New England about a wood burning fireplace. From the scent of the wood to the crackle of the fire, it is a romantic addition to your stay at The Newbury Boston. Each Fireplace Suite comes complete with the services of a fireplace butler.
EPA's Voluntary Fireplace Program encourages the development and sale of lower-emitting wood-burning fireplaces and retrofit devices. The program covers new masonry and prefabricated (low-mass) fireplaces, as well as retrofit devices for existing fireplaces. Fireplace retrofits can reduce pollution up to 70 percent if installed properly
In order to qualify a fireplace or retrofit device, manufacturers must follow detailed certification and qualification steps per the partnership agreement, and models must be tested by an accredited independent laboratory. EPA has sole responsibility for qualifying models under the Voluntary Fireplace Program.
The Maricopa County Fireplace Retrofit Program (MCFRP) is a program designed to reduce air pollution from wood burning fireplaces and provide residents cleaner air to breathe. You must reside within the program boundaries of Baseline Road to Northern Avenue and 59th Avenue to 16th Street to be eligible to apply. (See map below.)
I've booked an accommodation with my husband for the weekend and specifically looked for the feature of indoor fireplace. Have just messaged the host prior to the trip to ask how this works and they've said it isn't functioning and the chimney is actually blocked off.
Disappointed and can't find anywhere that provides information on next steps....or whether if they list an indoor fireplace whether it should be working? Common sense tells me it should otherwise it's just a prop?
@Deborah527 This is shown on the amenity list if it is available to a guest. My living room has a fireplace which is in the photos, but I do not have the fireplace amenity checked since I do not trust anyone to know how to manage a wood fire.
Not shown: We added a 24 on the front frame above the insert to hold into place, important because you will screw the drywall into it. We pulled the thermostat cord for the fireplace out between the 2x4s on the right side so we could access it after drywalling. The we set up the TV component on the 24 shelf. It will be hidden behind the TV. We had to drill holes through a couple of the framing wood pieces to thread the power cord through. The TV plugs into the same floor outlet as the insert. It can only be accessed if you pull out the out the fireplace insert (which we have never had to do).
You can see the shelf for the TV components, which will be hidden by the TV. And we cut a hole for the thermostat cord on the right side, and taped the cord to the fireplace. Once we are done mudding, I will connect the thermostat box and mount on the side of the fireplace. This box turns the fireplace on/off.
When we first looked at this house, the built-ins immediately caught my eye, but the 80s brick fireplace itself with a random piece of wood as the mantel was dated. I stared at this wall for years, contemplating ways to update the fireplace and built-ins.
Thankfully for me, the brick was brown, unlike the red brick fireplace my parents had in their home (and yes, they also had wood paneling.) My mom painted her fireplace in a cream color to match the white walls, and 20-plus years later, the paint still looks great.
Material Bespoke Stone came over to check out the situation and brought their CAD designer, who took exact measurements of the existing brick fireplace, hearth, and mantel. Meanwhile, I pursued their surround and mantel designs in their library, along with stone samples. I immediately gravitated towards Riviera Beige Limestone, one of their most popular stones, because of its versatility. It was also, surprisingly, one of the most cost-effective stones. I say surprisingly because normally pick the most expensive.
A week later, I received a CAD markup of the proposed new limestone custom fireplace design in my inbox. After a few minor tweaks, the design was sent to their fabricator, and I was told the finished stone pieces would be trucked to my home for delivery.
My friend Anne Sage limewashed the brick fireplace in her new home using Portola Paint. She started with a more watered-down solution and worked up to this. You can see more photos of her beautiful living room in her Designing An Awkward Space blog post (she has some lever tips).
My friend Bre had a black glossy tile on her fireplace but wanted an earthy, organic plaster look. Seriously, this fireplace makeover is a stunner! Get her DIY Roman Clay fireplace tutorial here.

This is actually pretty similar to what we want to do but we have to reface our entire fireplace and I am still trying to convince hubby to life it off the floor. I think a hearth would be so much better. Love yours and great job.

In Sacramento County wood burning in fireplaces and wood stoves creates 50 percent of wintertime air pollution, mainly composed of fine particulate matter. This type of pollution is a serious health threat. In order to protect public health, the Sac Metro Air District regulates the type of wood burning appliances (fireplaces, wood stoves, pellet stoves) that can be installed in Sacramento County.
Sac Metro Air District Rule 417 prohibits the installation of any indoor or outdoor, permanently installed fireplaces after October 26, 2007 in any residential or commercial building. Traditional, open-hearth fireplaces are no longer legal to sell or install in Sacramento County.
Designed to look good anywhere, this direct vent gas fireplace doesn't need a pre-existing fireplace in which to sit. The venting can be passed through a wall or ceiling to the outdoors, providing the air needed to circulate around the fire box without the need for a chimney.

No. To be eligible for a rebate, installed fireplace equipment must be of the same equipment type as removed equipment. (Ex. natural gas fireplace must be replaced by a natural gas fireplace). This program does not allow fuel switching or provide rebates for new equipment that does not replace old equipment of the same fuel type or that is being installed in new construction homes.
AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency and FE stands for Fuel Efficiency. In general, these acronyms represent the percentage of heat in the incoming fuel which is converted to space heat instead of being lost. The higher the AFUE/FE rating, the more efficient the fireplace is when it converts fuel into energy.

Protection of air quality is important in Pitkin County. As a result, the county regulates the number of fireplaces and wood stoves that can be placed in buildings. Applicants for a building permit must file a fireplace / wood stove registration with the County's Building Department before a building permit will be issued.
To determine the regulatory requirements for your property, the first thing you will need to determine is the parcel's 12-digit identification number, or "Parcel ID." This number can be obtained from the Pitkin County Assessor's Office by calling 970-920-5160, or it can be searched online.
If the first 6 digits of your Parcel ID are in the following list, the property is in the former PM-10 Non-Attainment Area of the county (currently designated as an attainment / maintenance area).
Once you determine if your property is in the former Non-Attainment Area or the Attainment Area, you can determine the county's fireplace / wood stove requirements and obtain a Building Department registration form online.
The building may have 1 fireplace or wood stove and 1 gas log fireplace or certified wood stove. If there is no fireplace or woodstove, the building may have either 2 gas log fireplaces or 2 certified wood stoves, or 1 of each. The building may also have an unlimited number of decorative gas appliances.
