How do I write a program to capture chat room text?

I have been looking for a program that allows me to capture the text
typed in chat rooms. I have looked for a tool to do this but can't
find one. The screen capture tools like SnagIt all capture the text as
an image and I want to acutually capture the ASCII text so that it is
searchable.

Another thing is that I want to be able to leave it running
continually so that it captures or records all the new text that
appears in the window and writes it to sort of log file.

If anyone has a program that can do this or has any ideas about how to
write such a program in VB I would be very interested to hear from
you.

I have had some VB experience but don't really know where to start
with this so any suggestions or example code would be much
appreciated.
