HOST: Nokinba Acker, BASC
Radford University faculty and students have traveled to Barrow for a number of years to conduct geophysical studies of the sea ice. Our scientific goal on this trip is to investigate a possible correlation between the temperature of the surface of the sea ice and the thickness of the ice. We will discuss how our work last week guided our work in this second week—we learned from our failures! We will discuss the equipment that we are using this trip including a custom-made thermal sensor that measures the sea ice temperature, a capacitively coupled electrical resistivity array, a thermal imager, and an ice drill to ground-truth the resistivity data. We will also discuss our trip’s educational outreach. Our Science Education faculty member is working with a Radford University student teacher to connect a number of K-12 classrooms in Virginia and elsewhere to both our research as well as with the uniqueness of Barrow.
