Sled dog racing is just like any sport, it takes a highly skilled, trained and healthy athlete. In the case of the Iditarod, the number one athlete is the dog! Just like human athletes, these canines are put to the test before, during and after the race to make sure they start healthy and stay healthy. The Veterinary Team is part of this from beginning to end, performing over 10,000 checks on the dogs, including exams, collecting samples and communicating with mushers to ensure the health and safety of the team. Come learn what it takes to make sure a musher’s team is ready for the last great sled race on Earth.
