Dear Neighbor,

Councilmember Maio requested I forward her message below to you.  Please let others in your neighborhood know the School District has decided not to locate the Community School at the Adult School.

Dear Neighbors,

I have asked Brad Smith to send the following information out to the comprehensive BAS neighborhood list.  I learned today that the School District has decided not to locate the Community School at the BAS.  I have no information as to why.  I recently raised concerns about the quality of the proposed space, and we know that there are strong concerns in the neighborhood about potential safety impacts and how they would be addressed.  I expect there will be public discussion at an upcoming School Board meeting about the decision and I will also see what more I can learn.

:)))))

Nice work folks!

It must have been  the proposed space issue that pushed this to a closure ;)))

Hello Brad,

Supt Huyett personally called my wife Vanessa today around 2pm to inform us of the decision of the BUSD to push the CDS to ACOE and not consider BAS as a location for the school. This has been the result of the work of a lot of people in the neighborhood, who unlike Linda Maio do not derive their income from representing themselves. Linda Maio’s contribution has been minimal. It is unfair to everyone’s work to have her assert credit for the decision.

BAS Accountable’s work is a matter of public record. Linda’s marginal involvement is also a matter of public record. I think it is important for the rest of the neighbors to be informed about how they were represented.

Regards,

Charis

Thanks to everyone who took time and fought the good fight demanding a
hard look at this poorly conceived solution to a serious problem. I
hope the district and county reconsiders how they utilize needs
assessments in designing realistic logic models, the who, what, and
how of program development. BUSD has not embraced data driven
assessment to this day, hopefully this experience will motivate
change. Everyone wants to see teens under community corrections
supervision, middle schoolers with addiction and behavioral problems,
and chronic truants graduate from high school, improve their attitude
and participate in society. But warehousing or independent studies
does not accomplish these goals well.

Friends and Neighbors,

I think everyone' input and work has contributed to the Board's decision to take this item off the agenda. BUSD still has to deal with their problem students, though, so there's no telling what their next strategy will include. Hopefully, BAS won't be part of it.

I'd like for us to continue to monitor what's happening at BAS, coming now to understand that some neighbors are having significant problems with the current adult probationary students enrolled there.

Please continue to post issues, events or other observations/experiences as they occur. I'd like also to find time to talk with Principal Burr Guthrie about this student population and the problems they currently present to the community and the school and how that might be mitigated in the future.

A BIG thank you to Vaness and Charis for their tireless efforts to collect data and hold people accountable; amazing work!

Also thanks to Laura Menard who has really opened my eyes to the problems in poor policy making within BUSD and critical issues that I intend to remain involved in.

Peace,
Heather Wood

I'm afraid if I name names I'll leave someone out.  But I really want to send my most sincere thank you to all who worked so hard on this.  I am convinced the school district did not make their decision because the school was an obvious bad choice, but rather to avoid the constant, well-researched, well-articulated opposition from our community.  You gave them more than they wanted to deal with, and it was very effective.  I'm very happy to have you as neighbors and hope we can all communicate again on issues of importance in our neighborhood.  Thanks again!!!!

Hi,

I hope this is ok bringing this up through this group.  I figured since many of us live in the neighborhood and are concerned about crime, it applies.

My car was broken into TWICE this week, once Friday night and once last (Sunday) night.  They only took some change I had hidden in the ashtray.  But what a violation!  And to come back again last night, especially after my meager prize just seems strange.  I'm going to file a police report.  But I'm just wondering if anyone nearby is dealing with this too.  I live on Virginia between Chestnut and Franklin.

Thanks.

Linda,

Thank you for bringing up this issue. I have not recently experienced any break-ins (although there have been MANY in the past), but will repost this on our Block Yahoo Group to see if anyone else has had recent break-ins.

I am hoping you have filed with the police department, even if the only things stolen was some change. It is unfortunately true that often these crimes go unreported b/c it feels futile. But the only way the PD can allocate more time/cars to the area is if they have enough reports that crimes are occurring.
