Unfortunately even the Schoolhouse Creek Common is not immune to criminal activity. It really pisses me off that these people take advantage of our beautiful space to conduct criminal activities! I saw the broken glass that Brad is referring to. On the 1200 block of Francisco an old couple’s home was burglarized a few weeks back.
I propose the following:
· Step up a crime watch program where we make ourselves visible in coordination with the police department. Vigilance and support each other even if we disagree on crime rates J.
· Step up an effort to shut down BAS – I am working on it (will send a follow-up email)

Subject: Schoolhouse Creek Common: upcoming work day & too many bad guys around, let's nudge them away
Dear Neighbors,
So there’s no confusion, the next work day is on Saturday, June 11, 10 to noon.
In response to the initial e-mail, it was reported that a car window was smashed with a rock on the driver’s side on Thursday (6/2) on Francisco Street near Curtis.

hello --
The next work day is this Saturday, June 11, 10 to noon. A mellow but nonetheless important work day: We need to do some trimming near Virginia Street pick off some manzanita leaves that are showing signs of bugs and fungus. Could just be a result of a long, wet spring, but best to bag 'em and trash 'em. Plus some seed collection if any seed heads are dry enough and summer-weed weeding.
Also: Virginia Street between Cornell and Curtis -- and to a lesser extent, the garden itself -- may have become a favorite spot for some of the area's professional party drinkers and (perhaps) dope dealers.
There's recently been several rendezvous of 2-3 cars on Virginia near the small gate. People hand things in and out of windows and/or take their bottles up to the benches, get loud and leave trash. I've sensed, maybe, a little pick up in the number of people who seem to be waiting for a connection. The scene feels different than the usual buddies sharing a beer thing, and it seems unconnected to the Adult School.
Before this gets out of hand, I though we could, as one neighbor would like, open things up some by pruning the area to the south of the little gate on Virginia. And I know it's a sensitive subject, but if you see something that could make Schoolhouse Creek Common less inviting at that moment and, of course, over time, I'd urge you to consider calling the Berkeley Police Department. I'll get in touch with the BPD Area Coordinator and ask that they swing by some more. I'll let the Adult School know, too.
