my number 3 child has some on his laptop free from school I believe but I dont see him that often

Hey David,
The defacto one most people tend to use is Eagle CAD (http://www.cadsoftusa.com/). It's free for circuits up to a size of 100 x 80 mm, and isn't too hard to learn, plus I'm sure there are plenty of tutorials around for it.
