Anyone got any old CD/DVD rom drives they don't need? I fancy converting them into a mini CNC machine but I don't seem to have any lying around.

Cheers

I do have a few, even a couple bluray drives.

But would you be willing to help me make my own or make 2 and let me know what extra parts i'd need?

Regards,

Chris

Sure,

I think I have sourced some now, but happy to work together on this one. Feel free to bring any spares you have next Tuesday though and we can get started.

My plan is to use an arduino with GRBL and a couple of cheap motor drivers (EasyDriver). The frame I'm planning to work out to cut on the laser cutter so I'm hoping for something that looks quite nice too. Ultimately I'm looking to make more of a pen plotter (not sure what your end goal is), but the core should pretty much be the same for most things and it'll just differ on the Z axis configuration.

Cool, i'd be happy to buy a few of those drivers off you if you have any spare?

I'm thinking of doing a laser engraver, but i could make multipurpose depending on the z axis as you say.

Sure,

Right now I've bought 2 easyDrivers and a couple of smaller options which should work too so depending on what I use, you can use the other two (they should both work the same).

It could be cool to try and design a nice interchangeable head so you can change it pretty easily. First steps first though aye :)
