The event is tonight! We look forward to seeing you there!

The Barnard College Center for Translation Studies would like to invite you to a talk by Sarah Spence and Elizabeth Wright, from the University of Georgia, titled "The Galley Slave's Dilemma." The event takes place Wednesday, April 17, at 6:30 PM in the Ella Weed Room in 222 Milbank Hall.

Sarah Spence and Elizabeth Wright will discuss Juan Latino (1517?-?) whom African Diaspora scholars celebrate as the first poet from sub-Saharan Africa to publish a book of poems in a European Language. They will discuss in particular how Latino translated the Virgilian literary tradition in his poem about the Battle of Lepanto (1571), a poem marked by the points of contact and conflict between Christians and Muslims.

The event is free and open to the public. Please pass on this invitation to anyone you think might also be interested.
