Elsa Kammerer is the author, most recently, of Jean de Vauzelles et le creuset lyonnais. Un humaniste catholique au service de Marguerite de Navarre (1520-1550) (Genève, Droz, 2013).

We write to invite you to a lecture by Elsa Kammerer (Assistant Professor at the Université de Lille 3) about the very first German translator of François Rabelais. The lecture (in French) is titled: “La traduction comme expérimentation: Johann Fischart et Rabelais (1575-1590).” The even is free and open to the public—please feel free to pass this invitation on to anyone else you might think would be interested.

Lecture Description:

How does humor translate? Elsa Kammerer examines the first German translation of the works of French comic genius François Rabelais. What challenges did Johann Fischart (1545–1591) face while translating the scatological and deeply political story of a giant called Gargantua? Elsa Kammerer is a professor in the department of French and comparative literature at the Université Lille III. This event is sponsored by the Barnard Center for Translation Studies, funded by the Mellon Foundation.

Comment traduire l’humour de Rabelais ? Dans son intervention, Elsa Kammerer examinera la première traduction allemande de l’œuvre rabelaisienne, réalisée par Johann Fischart (1545-91). Quels furent au juste les défis auxquels Fischart dut faire face en traduisant le texte simultanément scatologique et politique de Rabelais ? Elsa Kammerer est Maître de conférences à l’Université de Lille 3, l’auteur de Jean de Vauzelles et le creuset lyonnais. Un humaniste catholique au service de Marguerite de Navarre (1520-1550) (Genève, Droz, 2013). Cet événement est organisé par le Center for Translation Studies, parrainé par la Fondation Mellon.
