Hello Barleycorn Family
We’re switching things up again for the last Monday of the month, tweaking our usual format to pack even more original music onto the Barleycorn stage!
To kick things off, we have a short-set segment featuring 3 songwriters sharing 2 songs each: Tithonia Roux uses her craft as a way of processing life events through song; Laurence Botha brings a preference for honest songs over shiny ones, where heart, grit, and the occasional rough edge do exactly what they should; and Matt Roux joins us to share his songwriting and vocal skills honed over sixteen years performing the length and breadth of the Western Cape.
Following that, we welcome the brilliant Brig Stanford (supported by Carl), a seasoned performer whose music offers a beautiful contradiction of raw power and sultry undertones while exploring the many colours and heartaches of romantic love.
Our finale features the Mel Malisch Band, who invite the audience into an authentic journey that blends introspection with edge and rhythm to create a truly special close to the night.

Brig Stanford (supported by Carl)
--------------------
From childhood, Brig could recite all of the lyrics to her mother's favourite musicians. What started as admiration evolved into writing poems that would inevitably become songs. Since then, Brig has been in several prominent bands in the Cape Town music scene and released music produced by the late great Andy Lund and Chris Tait. Brig is also the co-founder of Glastonfurry, an all-day music festival in aid of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. Glastonfurry is about to happen for the fourth time and is held at the iconic Armchair Theatre, bringing homes to furry friends and great music to all.
Vocally, Brig offers a beautiful contradiction. Raw power softened by sultry undertones lends itself perfectly to the themes she explores in her music. Explorations of feminism within a patriarchal society, friendships and the many colours and heartaches that come with romantic love. Whether it’s the falling in and out of love, the almost maybes, the casual affairs, the so-deep-in-you-cant-see-out-of-it, the toxic lovers, the addictive lovers, Brig leaves no stone unturned. More often than not, her lyrics go deeper than the typecasts and speak of intricacies that are honest and relatable.
“I have had a lot of heartache in my life, and writing songs not only helps me to psychoanalyse myself, but provides a vehicle for my romantic nature. It means being able to take a shitty situation or hard lesson and turn it into something beautiful. At heart, I am an artist, and all I really want to do is use my given talent to put something beautiful and meaningful back into the world. If just one person is inspired by that, I win."
Brig will be supported by Carl on the night who will also be sharing two recent original songs.
