Andy Mercer

--------------------

Andy Mercer came to songwriting late in life as one of his “things I want to do when I retire”. After a couple of years developing short instrumental pieces and becoming increasingly frustrated that the words wouldn’t come, he discovered the Cape Town School of Songwriting and enrolled for the course.

Three years on he says that this move made the difference between sitting in the audience and wishing he had something to perform, and getting up on stage and doing it.

As a relative newcomer Andy approaches each new song as a fresh challenge and tries to learn and build in something he hasn’t done before - whether in words, rhythm, melody, or performance. He believes that this keeps his interest high - and hopes it does the same for his audience.

Lift Club

--------------------

Lift Club is an inter-generational 5-piece band, based in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town.

The band comprises Julian Janisch on keyboard, Crick Lund on base, Dee and Erin Janisch on vocals and Lawrence Helman on guitar and vocals.

At the Barleycorn gig on 27 October, we will be joined by young musical prodigy, Sam Lund on drums.

Over the years we have had the privilege of playing with Cape Town music icons, Andrew Janisch and Pete Digby.

Andrew showed us how to write our own material. He taught us not to ignore the importance of lyrics.

Our music is a mix of folk and blues with a touch of rock, jazz and pop. It has been described as “the opposite of hectic”.

We are 3-time finalists in the Barleycorn songwriter’s competition. We have played at many of Cape Town’s leading venues including, of course, the Barleycorn Folk Club.

We have 2 CD’s out - “School Boy” and “Far Off Distant Places”. We are currently working on a 3rd EP release with Wayne Pauli and Dave Langemann.

“Well I saw an old Sannyasin

He was walking down the street

Purple robes upon his shoulders

Leather sandals on his feet

I said hey there Sannyasin at least you’ve got a plan

He said I’m just a holy roller

I’m not a holy man

Holy Man 2018”

Lost//Youth

--------------------

Lost//Youth is entering a new era as an acoustic duo. Originally known as a 4 piece alt/rock band with 90s grit and dynamic melodies, the Cape Town based group are now turning towards a more intimate and storytelling performance.

At the heart of the project is Alanna Joy’s ethereal, emotive vocals and vulnerable lyricism, and paired with Faghri Hendricks’ intricate alt guitar riffs, the result is timeless and otherworldly.

Though their sound has taken on new shape, the essence of Lost//Youth remains honest, evocative and ever evolving.
