DAVE & UTA
This duo makes up 2/5ths of the band Garage. When performing on their own, they depart from the usual rock and pop sounds of the band and head into calmer, acoustic vibes. On guitar, the quietly understated Dave Stodel's forte is an abundance of delicate guitar touches – apart from writing and arranging most of the band and duo’s songs. His day-job as a full-time self-employed guitar teacher tends to keep him adept at his art!
Uta Higgs brings a wealth of singing experience and she has the uncanny ability to make each song her own. Besides working in project management and design, Uta is an active committee member of South Africa's longest running folk music club, Barleycorn.
ZWIKOV CHIREMA
Svikov brings us soulful lyrics that are smoothly delivered to a number of different beats. His genres include latin, jazz, folk and pop - difficult to put this man in a box, so we will let you decide!
DAVE STARKE
Dave strives to capture human moments in musical form - to sum up a whole host of thoughts and emotions using just his voice and a guitar. He describes the guitar as a "wooden box with strings, tensioned to near breaking point – it's fundamental, honest and often scary and it's a good metaphor for the human experience..."
His music is lyric-driven, performed on guitar with occasional touches of percussion and some very haunting whistling. For Dave it's all about telling stories, so the voice is the most important instrument and everything else is there to be a support structure for the narrative.
Two of the songs from his most recent album were semi-finalists in The UK Songwriting Contest in 2019 and one is a regional finalist in the 2020 AfriMusic Song Contest.
Dave will be introducing us to his new album Shifting Boundaries. Building on his first offering, Duende, it is an examination of the writer's self, but also of the greater human experience. Stories about broken relationships, therapy and big changes, but also about optimism, recovery and small mercies. Shifting Boundaries is a true folk album and is designed to be heard as a whole...a journey – his stories are your stories and yours are his.
