Gravel Road
--------------------
The Gravel Road repertoire includes traditional folk, bluegrass, sea shanties, instrumental pieces and a capella songs. Each member plays an instrument as well as singing, giving a full sound with multiple harmonies. The instrumental lineup is largely determined by the genre of the songs and tunes. Typically, Irish songs will require guitar, mandolin, whistle or flute, double bass and occasionally bodhrán for percussion, as will most of the folk songs. Bluegrass is a spin-off of American country roots music, originally popularised by Bill Monroe. The genre takes its name from his band, the Blue Grass Boys, who named their group for the bluegrass of Monroe’s home state of Kentucky. It usually features banjo and mandolin together with the double bass, guitar and strong vocal harmonies. The a capella component of the band’s repertoire includes gospel, sea shanty, traditional English and Irish folk songs.
Gravel Road, four members. Right to Left as you look at the stage: Neil Harvey - guitar, harmonica, vocals. Maddy Ginn - guitar, occasional double bass, vocals. Rob Anderson - double bass, mandolin, vocals. John Bolton - banjo, ukulele, whistles, flute, vocals.
All instruments are unplugged, and the sets are arranged to have as little changeover as possible.
