Hello Barleycorn Friends & Family

We’ve got a cracking lineup this Monday, May 18th, shifting from intimate, lyrical storytelling to melodic rock with a classic edge.

Brig Stanford opens the evening, bringing a captivating vocal blend of raw power and sultry undertones to her honest explorations of love, life, and everything in between. She is followed by Andy Hoyle, a Cape Town-based songwriter who shares a deep catalogue of accessible, laid-back acoustic tracks inspired by his African home and international folk influences. Soltree rounds out the night, trading their usual grunge-fuelled electric set for a gentler, melodic acoustic performance that showcases the songwriting craft behind their nearly two-decade-long journey in the local scene.

FEATURING:

Brig Stanford

--------------------

From childhood, Brig could recite all of the lyrics to her mother's favourite musicians. What started as admiration evolved into writing poems that would inevitably become songs. Since then, Brig has been in several prominent bands in the Cape Town music scene and released music produced by the late great Andy Lund and Chris Tait. Brig is also the co-founder of Glastonfurry, an all-day music festival in aid of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

Vocally, Brig offers a beautiful contradiction. Raw power softened by sultry undertones lends itself perfectly to the themes she explores in her music. Explorations of feminism within a patriarchal society, friendships and the many colours and heartaches that come with romantic love. Whether it’s the falling in and out of love, the almost maybes, the casual affairs, the so-deep-in-you-cant-see-out-of-it, the toxic lovers, the addictive lovers, Brig leaves no stone unturned. More often than not, her lyrics go deeper than the typecasts and speak of intricacies that are honest and relatable.

“I have had a lot of heartache in my life, and writing songs not only helps me to psychoanalyse myself, but provides a vehicle for my romantic nature. It means being able to take a shitty situation or hard lesson and turn it into something beautiful. At heart, I am an artist, and all I really want to do is use my given talent to put something beautiful and meaningful back into the world. If just one person is inspired by that, I win."

Brig will be supported by Carl on the night who will also be sharing two recent original songs.

Andy Hoyle

--------------------

Andy Hoyle is a guitarist/singer/songwriter based in Cape Town, South Africa, who began writing songs in the early eighties. He has generated a considerable body of original music which he now intends sharing with all those who love his accessible, laid back, acoustic style.

Andy is continually inspired by what he sees and hears around him every day - he has written songs about a surprisingly wide variety of subjects, all influenced by an exciting blend of international singer/songwriter styles and the rhythms of his African home.

Soltree

--------------------

Soltree is a 4-piece rock band that originated in 2006. The Soltree sound is grunge with a melodic edge, led by singer and songwriter Alun Tucker, who founded the band with original drummer Rory O’ Connor.

Soltree plays exclusively original music written by Tucker, with the odd alternative cover thrown in. Robin Lang joined the band on lead guitar in the mid-2010s, and Morne Van Der Berg joined as drummer in 2010. After Tucker, the longest serving band member is Riaan Oppelt (aka Riggs), who joined as bassist in 2007.

Soltree is inspired by every major rock act from The Beatles to Prince, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Lenny Kravitz, Stereophonics, Biffy Clyro, The Cure and David Bowie. The band plays a hard electric set and a gentle, melodic acoustic set.

The latter will be on display at The Barleycorn.
