Sophie Joans
--------------------
Sophie Joans is a multi award-winning theatre-maker and comedian, and (although not many people know) also a singer-songwriter of serious songs. She made a name for herself playing comedy songs on her ukulele on the stand-up circuit when she was 19. Since, she’s gone on to write, produce and perform numerous plays and shows, tour the world, run a theatre company and storytelling events. She’s thrilled to be strumming and writing music again after a hiatus of a few years. She’s also very proud to be the daughter of David Schmidt, a former finalist at the Barley Corn Songwriter’s Competition.

Singalong Folk Club
--------------------
Established in 1980, existing until 1981, the Singalong Folk Club 1980 consisted mainly of students from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and the then Peninsula Technicon (Pentech), operating from the upper Cygnet Hall of the old Swanie’s Inn in Bellville South. Songs and poetry centred mostly around resistance to Apartheid with the monthly concerts commemorating important ‘Struggle’ Days such as Sharpeville Day (now Human Right’s Day), Soweto Day /June 16 (now Youth Day), May Day (Worker’s Day) and Women’s Day with other lighter themes in between.
Two years ago, after 40-odd years, the seven surviving original members came together to discuss ways in which to record and memorialise the story of the Singalong Folk Club as part of the cultural and anti-apartheid protest history of Cape Town. This reunion resulted in a successful Singalong Folk Club Revisited Concert held at the Novalis Institute in Wynberg on 13 October 2024, with many positive reviews from attendees who were mostly anti-apartheid activists. A few professional recording sessions of at least three of the original compositions have followed and are still in progress.
The current active members at tonight’s session are: Yendor Adonis (Bass Guitar/Acoustic Guitar/Vocals), Henry Herring (Acoustic Guitar/Bass Guitar/Vocals), Belinda Jackson (Keyboard/Acoustic Guitar/Vocals), and narrators Michael Benjamin and Hein Willemse (writer/poet/academic).

Fraser Harper
--------------------
A singer/songwriter originally from the North East of England, home of Lindisfarne (both the island and the band), Hadrian’s Wall and Newcastle Brown Ale, Fraser blends blues, folk and even a smattering of progressive rock into his music. The result – he hopes – will entertain and have you singing along. Fraser Harper - Musician. Storyteller. All-round decent(ish) bloke.
