Hello Barleycorn Friends & Family

New format, new energy, showcasing some of the Cape Town’s best female singer-songwriters!

This Monday, June 29th, we are changing things up. Come be a part of an authentic, creative night out in your city as we bring together five incredible artists for a showcase of pure storytelling, raw vocals, and local talent. Grab your friends and join the community.

We open the floor next Monday with three distinct, brilliant voices sharing their craft in an intimate, collective setting:

Annique Bester: Melodic, acoustic storytelling built on unique, self-taught guitar chords and deeply personal expressions.

Morgan Visser: Authentic, commanding indie-folk with powerhouse vocals and an undeniable live presence.

Sophia Frank: Razor-sharp lyricism meeting high-energy indie-pop-rock, fresh off her new track "Older Than You”.

The Features:

Alanna Joy: Fierce, emotionally vulnerable indie-rock stripped down to its raw acoustic roots.

Amy Tjasink: Performing her chart-topping single Feels Like Mzanzi.

Hayley Jade: Quietly hypnotic alt-folk driven by soulful stories, a touch of mischief, and her signature whistling interludes.

SEGMENT 1:

Annique Bester:

I’ve been ‘song-making ’ since I could talk. As a 3 year old I would tell a story and then sing it. My dad made a recording of my first Christmas jingle at the age of five and that tune has been living rent free in my family’s brains ever since. Over the years I taught myself how to play guitar and with made up chords I started adding melodies to words. I never saw myself qualified to be a ‘singer-songwriter’ as my dyslexic brain freezes every time it gets nervous, so I stayed in my room. My songs would make it to close family and friends and a few to social media, but then I try to perform and I run back to my safe space. My room. I studied performing arts/musical theater and performing and singing as a character, never was the problem. That blew my mind, because what’s the difference? I came to realize that when it comes to my own expressions, performing is not what I was meant to do, sharing however is. Art is like the nervous system that makes the whole body called humanity feel and when it feels it starts moving and doing. That makes sharing art an important act. With that in mind I’ll try again to get up behind the mic, but this time I’m just here to practice sharing.

Morgan Visser:

Morgan Visser is a 22 year old rising South African singer-songwriter who was performing almost as soon as she could speak. From early competitions and charity performances to booking her first solo show at just 15 and later selling out a one-woman production at The Kalk Bay Theatre, Morgan has steadily developed a reputation for authenticity and commanding live performances.

She captivated audiences during the Pretty Loud Mainstage Takeover at Up The Creek, where she truly shone as a powerhouse performer, delivering vocals that left a lasting impression.

Sophia Frank:

With raw vocals and razor-sharp lyricism, Sophia Frank captures the quiet moments we wish we could shout about and the loud ones we never found the words for. Inspired by Hannah Montana and Avril Lavigne, the 25-year-old singer-songwriter crafts pop-rock anthems for your most complicated feelings — songs made for scream-singing at 2AM, windows down, mascara smudged, heart wide open.

Her debut single “Overrated” landed her on the cover of Spotify’s South African Rock playlist, introducing a bold new voice in the local scene. She followed with playlist cover features for her collaborations with fellow South African artists and built that momentum into a sold-out headline show at Kaya Café in Cape Town.

Her standout track “BICTH” (all caps, spelt wrong, on purpose) isn’t about heartbreak — it’s about owning wrongship. Sophia reclaimed the word as a statement of self-awareness, power, and accountability. She has collaborated with Erin Elliott and CARLA FRANCO, been selected to perform and write at Spotify showcase events, and recently headlined at Up The Creek Festival for Pretty Loud, helping to empower women in the music industry.

SEGMENT 2: Alanna Joy & Special Guest

--------------------

“Alanna Joy wears her heart on her sleeve with each and every number, taking you across an ocean of love, life, dreams and heartbreak” - Kevin Abbott

Irish/South African songwriter Alanna Joy is known for her fierce performances and vulnerable lyrics. She began her musical journey as a busker on the streets of Cape Town before entering the Rock scene and going on to perform on stages around South Africa with well-known acts like Majozi, Robin Auld and Craig Lucas.

Alanna formed the group Lost//Youth in 2021 who have gone on to release 3 EPs, complete five national tours and garner attention from local and international radio and press, with their song 'Bittersweet' topping the 5FM Indie chart in 2024.

Alanna will be joining us for a raw and stripped down set this coming Monday.

SEGMENT 3: Hayley Jade

--------------------

Hayley Jade is a horse trainer turned singer songwriter. Her work led her to spend much of her time in isolation in remote parts of Africa, Japan, and Europe where she would spend quiet evenings writing and playing guitar, tired after long hours in the saddle. Without a band, she took to whistling musical interludes to add space and movement to the songs, imagining a saxophonist or electric guitarist eventually playing the whistled melodies.

After some years on the road, she returned home to Cape Town and began to pursue a side career in music. Starting out as a busker outside restaurants, she progressed to playing weddings and events, and began to curate intimate concerts in houses and gardens. A quietly hypnotic alt-folk style earned her a small but committed audience and she soon found her way into the festival scene, where she would play soulful late night acoustic sets for those who needed a respite from techno and noisy dance floors. Ironically, the whistling became a defining feature of her music, so she continued to perform solo stripped live down sets instead of forming a band.

Her songs tell stories of love, loss, the land, & resistance toward the status quo- often with wry humour, mischief, and the occasional rebel cry.
