Dear Bareos Users,

Here is a quick update on what is happening around Bareos: work on incremental Proxmox VM backups for Bareos 26, our next Expert Circle, new maintenance releases and the latest articles from our open-source backup comparison series.

Incremental Proxmox VM backups are coming to Bareos 26

We are working on incremental backups for Proxmox VE virtual machines.
The first prototype is working and development is now continuing toward integration into Bareos 26.
The new functionality will work based on changed blocks. After an initial full backup, Bareos will identify which blocks of a virtual machine have changed and process only those changes in subsequent backups.

For larger virtual machines, this can reduce the amount of data that needs to be processed and also shorten backup times compared with creating another full backup.

The approach is comparable to the technology Bareos already uses for incremental VM backups with VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V.

Our open-source backup comparison series continues with a new article about recovery and disaster recovery.
The series now covers:

  • Central backup platforms vs simple backup tools
  • Storage, deduplication and encryption
  • Recovery and disaster recovery

The latest article looks at how different open-source backup tools handle file restore, virtual machines, databases and complete-system recovery.
