Hi there,

I was wondering if any of you would like to share his/her experiences with
tape libraries.

Are there any models that in your experience run exceptionaly well with
Bareos/Bacula on Linux?

Equally (or even more) interesting: Are there any models that you had a
realy hard time with and that you would rather avoid?

Cheers
Thomas

Hi,

I have good experience with MSL2024 from HP, and bad ones with old Dell
Library's.
What ballpark are you in, 24slot or a whole rack-library?

Hello,

we have had a MSL6000 (HP) with LTO-2 and since ~2 years a MSL4048
(HP) with LTO-4. Both work well after tweaking with dataspooling and
blocksizes, both are old style parallel scsi devices. We use Linux as
OS and director/storage on the same machine. The transfer rates for
the LTO-4 are from 85MByte/s to 110MByte/s with encrypted data and no
(tape related) errors so far.

Regards

Andreas

One additional thing to note: Most librarys today come from vendors
like BDT (http://www.bdt.de/produkte/storage-automation/tape-storage/)
and are branded for the IT company like HP/Fujitsu and the like. The
technical differences are mostly because of the controller used to
access the library and the tape drive used.

Andreas

Hi,
we have been working with Spectra Logic's T950s for almost 10 years
now. No problem at all.

Basically you need the (GNU) "mtx" command line tool to work with your
library robotics and the (GNU) "mt" and "dd" commands to work with the
drives. If that works there are no problems to be expected with
bacula/bareos.
Put this specific requirement into your inquiry and return the
hardware if it does not comply.

Cheers Jan

Thanks for your input guys!

So far I am considering a Tandberg T24 (12-24 Slots) or a Tandberg T40+ (24
- 40 Slots). If any of you have any experiences with these I would be very
curious to hear them. Apart from that I am still evaluating our needs
regarding backup size and duration.

Hello Thomas,

the testhardware in our lab is a T40 with two LTO4 FC Drives.

It works without problems.

Hi,

i have used bacula and bareos with several Tapelibs.
Overland ArcVault 24 (LTO3, one drive, SCSI)
Quantum Scalar i50 (LTO5, one drive, SAS)
IBM TS3584 (LTO6, 5 drives, 2 frames, FC)

all is working flawless but the IBM, the multi drive configuration is
still not perfect, and i'm missing some functions like disabling a drive
(because of fault or for maintenance).

The Overland and Quantum are running through one Backuphost with Linux
The IBM is driven by our FreeBSD 10 System and is working (after
selfcompiling the source).

My best System so far is the IBM one, 2nd Place is the Quantum. The
Worst ever! is the Overland system.
No Software problems, but the Hardware is a piece of crap, and we have
some Overland NEO8000 Systems in campus and i got told they have many
Hardware troubles too (but with a Commercial Backup Solution).

hope this helps.

Greets
Adam

Those two should not be a problem as we use those in our production
environments. Most important is that they are driven by the standard Linux
ST driver and not the IBM lin_tape driver (although we tried adding some
support for that we are not quite sure it now fully works.)

Also make sure you buy a changer with a barcode scanner although I think
ones without are not sold new anymore. And as already mentioned the the
important things are Linux ST driver and supported by MTX. If you want
to use hardware crypto (LTO4 and later) make sure either buy one that
has standard support for it or for some it can be you need to buy an
extra license key which uses some USB license stick you need to stick
into the library.

Nice. That makes me feel even better about my initial choice :-)

Thank y'all and looking forward to seeing some of you in Cologne at OSBConf.

Hi,

Does a Quantum scalar i3 (LTO-8) works with Bareos ?

I've been using a Dell TL4000 with a couple LTO4 tapes for a while, so far it's been good. though not with linux.

I Would like to know this too.
Have you already setup your bareos environment with this model of library?
