Hello all,

I am trying to see if Bareos can help me with my back up use case.
We have a Dell ML3 library and i am trying to understand if Bareos can work for backing up data to it.

What we need to be able to do is to be able to back up data from a remote TrueNas Core system directly to the tape (either through an agent if supported or an smb share). The library host does not have sufficient local storage to fist place the data there before backup up on the tapes.

Does Bareos have support for the ML3?  and if yes can it support this case?

Thank you!
George

If the ML3 supports mtx script (easy to test)
Then yes,

Baroes has a client the ‘fd’ that would scan and send the data directly to the ’sd’ which would be connected to the robot. I would setup a small fast disk pool to spool data, the spool not need to large enough to hold the full backup, my spools are 100GB, so I flush 100GB at a time to tape (it’s automatic) to avoid shoe-shininig the tape and wearing out the drives/tapes.

https://docs.bareos.org/TasksAndConcepts/DataSpooling.html

But yes It can do what you ask, and most tape robots work with mtx,

If the vendor states it supports Linux, it will work.

I haven't seen a tape-robot that you couldn't make work with Bareos yet.
Also, I haven't seen a tape-robot that didn't work out-of-the-box for
10+ years. You may need to tweak a few things to make it flawless, but
that's a different story.

Best Regards,
Andreas

It does have Linux support (typical enterprise distros -  Ubuntu, RHEL and Suse)

Thank you both. Will give the community version a try.

One last question. Does Bareos work with an agent? If yes does it have support for TrueNas Core (or FreeBSD) support?

Here is a list of bareos services with some additional information on what they do: https://docs.bareos.org/IntroductionAndTutorial/WhatIsBareos.html#bareos-components-or-services

The file daemon is probably what you refer to as agent. All of the services can be run on freebsd.

Kind Regards
