Hi,

I'm 100% new to Bareos.

I need to set up a simple way to make fast tape backups, the software I use now is not optimized with LTO drives and makes them shoe-shinning.

I installed first postgresql-17.5-2-windows-x64, and then Bareos-24.0.4~pre51.cc5ea4cf7-x64-Release.

I kept everything standard, except for the passwords that were all changed to the same very short one, security is not an issue.

At first,  I could go into the WEB UI and was asked for username and password, without succeeding.

And now, even that fails, the server is not running. net stop bareos-dir and net start bareos-dir did not help. Firewall is opened

A full bareos uninstall and install did not make the WEB UI functional again.

What do I need to do to make it work?

Thanks.

Hi,

1st of all: is the database running?
systemctl status postgresql

What is the output of
/usr/sbin/bareos-sd -t
/usr/sbin/bareos-fd -t
/usr/sbin/bareos-dir -t

?

Ah sorry, you installed on windows. Can you post any error messages?

Hi Birgit,

By looking into the doc, I found out that Bareos does not support tape backup on Windows, so I uninstalled it.

FYI, postgres was running. No error message other than a time out when trying to connect to the Bareos WB UI.

If you have a suggestion for a good free tape backup on Windows, let me know.

Thanks.

Hi Robert,

What about a test with Linux? Can you  f.ex eliminate windows and install an ubuntu on your server?
Then I could help you with your installation. Bareos is really a very good solution for backuping on tape.

That is correct, it is not supported. However, there are reports of
successful running Bareos on Windows with tape support (with single tape
drive, no with tape-libraries). However, that is rather a rather
untypical scenario.

Jörg

@Birgit

It's not worth it having to use Linux. I need something Windows.

At the moment, I use Iperius Backup. Not free but cheap considering that I bought it 12 years ago, and that I never had to pay anything to get new releases!

Iperius is really nice, but it's not 100% optimized for LTO-7 backups. It may be one day, I asked their support, but that does not prevent me to look around.

It's plug & play on Windows.

I prefer indeed to avoid something unsupported. I may need to restore backups years later!
