Using verify job to run tape job only if files have changed

I have quite a few tape pools in a large autoloader.

some of these tape pools have file changes every day and loding the tape is required for backup.

some of these pools dont have any changes for a month or so, and loading the tape is wearing out my media. I only want to load the tape and run the job if files change

has anyone done this with triggering the backup job with a verify job? or something similar?

some of these pools are large so having a backup to disk first and then staging to tape is impractical for initial full backups
