Los Angeles filmmakers Stephanie Argy and Alec Boehm offer a free three-hour workshop, "Acting for the Camera," Thurs., Aug. 30, 6:30-9:30 p.m. at KCPT's Uptown rehearsal space. This workshop, brought to you in conjunction with Key City Public Theatre and the Port Townsend Film Institute, will use a single scene as the basis for exploration of the technical aspects of the filmmaking process.

Argy and Boehm focus on collaboration with the actors to tell a story for the screen. “With this one scene as our example, we'll describe how the two of us approach coverage, lighting and sound," said Boehm, "why it's important to hit marks, how and why we might make editing choices, and much more."

Years ago, actors who came up through the studio system were given in-depth training in how camera, lighting, editing and other aspects of production would impact their performances. "Today it's very hard for actors to get that kind of training," said Boehm, "even in Los Angeles and New York."

This lack of training forces actors to learn by the seat of their pants in the stressful, high-pressure environment of actual film sets. Argy & Boehm have been working on ways to make that knowledge more available to actors in a relaxed, safe situation. In addition to their acting workshops, the two have launched a series of conversations in Los Angeles about film acting craft, which will soon be available online.

Argy and Boehm's feature film, "The Red Machine," and short film, "Gandhi at the Bat," both screened at the 2010 Port Townsend Film Festival. The two have been so taken by Port Townsend and its community they have set a key part of their next film in Port Townsend, which will be shooting in early Oct.
