Rebekah Cadorette & Susan Hazard

Rebekah Cadorette, well known for her handwoven garments and linens, will be featuring the Japanese folk art of Temari. In Japan, Temari evolved from child's toy to art and are highly valued and cherished gifts. Historically, they were constructed from recycled materials (rice hulls or old clothes) that were wadded up to form a ball, then wrapped with strips of fabric. As time passed, Temari became an art form, and the functional stitching became increasingly decorative and detailed, until the balls displayed intricate embroidery. Cadorette saw many Temari while living in Japan as a teenager, but it wasn’t until 2012 that she became fascinated with them and began her study of the art form. She enjoys the challenge of melding color, geometry, and intricate patterns to create heirloom ornaments. Having already been awarded Levels 1 and 2, she is currently working toward certification at Level 3 proficiency by the Japanese Temari Association. In keeping with tradition and her own personal policy of "nothing goes to waste," Cadorette’s Temari are made with loom leftovers and are comprised of 95% recycled and repurposed materials.

Susan Hazard’s current paintings are an exploration of new directions in mixed media techniques. The process of painting intuitively painting in acrylic or oils, mixed with gold, silver and copper leaf foils, creates images that create and reflect mystical environments through complementary color juxtapositions and changing light, inviting subjective interpretation by the viewer. Susan’s past career in designing and drafting for architects and landscape architects influence the paintings inner structure of organized plan views, compositions creating a foundation for energetic complementary colors. The structure of the paintings is further organized into compositions of a totem, a Celtic cross, or a leaded stained-glass window. The gold, silver and copper leaf foils reflect light, adding an additional dimension to the surface of the paintings. Sgraffito (to scratch) and markings add insightful thought and additional movement. Susan’s evolving direction in intuitive painting is a continuation directing shifting perceptions between colorful energy and deliberate composition.
