This is a unique opportunity to work with Portland Based Dance/Movement therapist

Yael Schweitzer, LCSW, BC-DMT.

She is coming to Port Townsend to offer a one day movement workshop based on Barbara Mettler's pioneering explorations of dance improvisation and group dance using the body's natural movements with the self and others. Yael Schweitzer, LCSW, BC-DMT, is a Portland based licensed clinical social worker, board-certified Dance/Movement Therapist and past president of The International Association for Creative Dance (IACD). With over 40 years of therapeutic experience Yael is the developer of: Mindfulness-Based Dance Movement Therapy (MB-DMT). She presents and teaches throughout the US, China, Israel, and Germany.

Barbara Mettler (1907-2002) who described her self as like a sister to Isa Dora Duncan, was active from the 1930s through the mid-1990s. Her work was characterized by her commitment to free movement expression and her use of improvisation with solo and large groups of dancers. Mettler believed that dance was a vital necessity and should be accessible and non-elitist. Mettler's approach to improvisation is based on sensory awareness and a heightening of  kinesthetic and proprioceptive senses. It is a somatically based path to creating inventive movement forms. Technical virtuosity is not the goal; the dance is performed for the sake of itself and the dancer, not for the benefit of a spectator. It is a way of moving from the inside out prompted by noticing and responding to the sensations of nerve endings as they speak through skin, muscle, joint, tendon, ligament, and inner ear.

This interactive workshop explores ways of developing embodied presence through dance and movement improvisation and non-verbal communication. Participants are invited to move freely following their kinesthetic sense, be mindful of authentic, natural movement forms that arise from within, express themselves creatively, and connect in movement with others.

The workshop emphasizes movement rooted in physical awareness and offers simple movement exercises and themes for self and interpersonal exploration. Through movement activities without external music participants access the pure experience of the art of body expression and the language of dance. The workshop activities are inspired by the practices and principles of Mettler-based dance improvisation, that aim to enhance embodied mindfulness, creativity, attuned connections, joy, and vitality, benefiting both personal and professional development and relationships.

No prior movement or dance experience necessary

All body types, and movement ability are welcome.
