Rainshadow Concerts: Golden Shoals
Sunday, February 22, 7:30pm
Rainshadow Recording at Fort Worden
Building 315
Port Townsend, WA 98368

Rainshadow Recording and Concerts welcomes Golden Shoals for a studio concert Sunday, February 22 at 7:30pm, at Rainshadow Recording in Port Townsend. This event is generously sponsored by Nicole Blasucci of Coldwell Banker Best Homes, Corvus Crafts, and Eaglemount Wine and Cider. Media sponsor is KPTZ Radio.

Known for their high-caliber songwriting and alluring vocal harmonies, Golden Shoals is a duo composed of Amy Alvey on fiddle and Mark Kilianski on guitar, often switching to two guitars or adding banjo. No Depression described Golden Shoals’ music as "rousing old-time-style music that’s fueled by acerbic modern-day wit.”

Initially brought together by a mutual love of American folk music, Golden Shoals has always been firmly steeped in old-time and bluegrass music. Over the years, their sound has expanded to include country, indie and experimental influences. Ever-inspired by the enduring spirit of traditional Appalachian mountain music, the duo's songwriting comes across as simple, honest, and fresh to the ears. Both highly-trained musicians, they also bring the grit and soulful drive of musicians like Roscoe Holcomb and Ola Belle Reed.

The duo first met at the Berklee College of Music and performed at their first festival in Cambridge, MA in 2014. Since then, Golden Shoals has traversed over land and sea, touring mostly to places like Europe, Alaska, Louisiana, Canada, Australia, recently appearing at the Westport Folk & Bluegrass Festival in Ireland. Amy lives in and tours out of Nashville where she leads jams and co-hosts a radio program on WMOT. Mark resides in Vancouver, BC where he is a core bandleader, organizer, and teacher amidst the resilient local music scene.

Amy Alvey and Mark Kilianski also teach lots of workshops, revered for their work in old-time, bluegrass and folk music. Golden Shoals headlined this year's Old Growth Oldtime festival in Seattle, and Amy led a popular workshop on bowing techniques while Mark taught a guitar workshop entitled “The Wide World of String Band Guitar”. The duo has also played many dances over the years, and on the day following their Sunday show at Rainshadow Recording, Golden Shoals will bring a special electric set to the square dance at Seattle's Tractor Tavern.

“Golden Shoals bridge the sometimes distant worlds of traditional bluegrass and old time music together. With one foot steeped in tradition and the other focused on fresh songwriting, Golden Shoals are helping to further the narrative of American Roots music and introducing the traditions of our past to a whole new generation of listeners.” - Kris Truelsen, WBCM Radio Bristol

"Golden Shoals weave together timeless melodies and virtuosic playing with just enough scrappy energy to keep things from getting too precious. It's a fresh and distinctive blend that can only be earned the hard way - through thousands of miles and hundreds of nights on the road." -Patrick Coman, WUMB's Local Folk

“Golden Shoals takes the best of two separate fantastic artists and melds them into something that is even greater than the sum of their parts. The band’s roots dig deep into the hills of Appalachian folk tunes and fiddle driven melodies. They blend two voices and instruments harmonious in a way that is…for lack of better phrasing, perfect harmony. Simple and relatable, but the musicianship of both of these artists is anything but simple.” - Red Line Roots
