Grammy-winning woodwind player, Nancy Rumbel, finger-style guitar maestro, Michael Mandrell, and local Celtic harpist David Michael will be performing in Port Townsend on Saturday afternoon, May 2, at 3pm in a concert to benefit Reach Out, a local all-volunteer organization that cooks and hand-delivers meals to those in need.

Michael McCutcheon, the man who started and runs the nonprofit Reach Out organization—and featured in the film Michael & Damian—has recently built a kitchen, assembled a team of helpers, and oversees the cooking and personal delivery of meals to Port Townsend’s homeless community and others in need. And the numbers are growing. They now feed around 200 folks a week. McCutcheon will also speak at the event.

The musicians will be volunteering their time to present this concert and will be donating the proceeds to Reach Out.

The trio is headlined by Nancy Rumbel, best known for her albums and concerts with guitarist Eric Tingstad, and as a member of the seminal Paul Winter Consort in the ‘70s and ‘80s. A master of the oboe, English horn, and ocarina, she has performed widely, from Carnegie Hall, to the Feng Ya Ocarina Festival in China. Rumbel also composed the theme song for the syndicated radio show Bird Note, heard by over 2 million listeners daily.

Rumbel teamed up with Port Townsend harpist, David Michael in 2019 to produce a world-fusion album, Confluence. Michael has resided in Port Townsend since 1990 and has produced 26 CDs of original music and several film scores. He became somewhat of an institution regionally for his 17-years of impromptu, free concerts aboard Washington State Ferries.

Michael Mandrell, hailing from Taos, New Mexico, met David Michael in 1994 while touring in the Pacific Northwest and began an ongoing collaboration, performing live in numerous ensembles and playing on each other’s CDs. Mandrell’s delicate guitar playing employs tinges of folk, jazz, ethnic, with an infusion of Celtic overtones. Mandrell was a prominent guest on David’s two most recent albums Confluence and Skyburst.

Rumbel, Michael, & Mandrell are eager to reunite as a trio after a sold-out Port Townsend performance in November.

The concert will be held at Unity of Port Townsend, located at 3918 San Juan Ave. (across the street from Blue Heron Middle School) Advance tickets are $50 from https://www.tinyurl.com/reachoutbenefit or $60 at the door (if not sold out.)

Additional tax-deductible donations to Reach Out can be made when purchasing online and at the event—which will also host a pie auction.
