=====================================================
Come enjoy dancing to lively music at the Black Diamond Community Center on Saturday evening, January 3, 2026 from 7:30 until 10:15 PM. Lots of fun! No partner necessary—everyone switches partners after each dance so it’s always comfortable finding a dance partner.
Talented local musicians, The Backwoods Hucksters (Cort Armstrong, Joey Gish and friends), provide the live music. The caller, Eric Curl, clearly explains the dance moves before and during each dance.
No experience required: contradances are easy to pick up. But first-time dancers are strongly encouraged to come at 7:00 when the caller gives a free lesson to practice the basic elements of contra dancing. After the lesson, experienced dancers are happy to dance with beginners to help them get comfortable with contradancing.
Admission is $20 on a sliding scale meaning that if you can only pay less, you can still dance. The 7:00 dance lesson is no-risk meaning that your admission fee is refunded if, after the dance lesson, you decide that you don’t want to stay for the rest of the dance. Please wear soft-soled, clean shoes to keep the dance floor in good condition.
Community Dance
The contradance is a true community dance attended by all kinds of folks from the Port Angeles, Sequim, Port Townsend area and even Victoria. You’re likely to see parents with children and possibly some babies; young adults who have been dancing for years or just a short time; older adults who may have been dancing for decades. On special occasions, usually the first and last dance of the season, people gather for a potluck before the dance. Everyone is welcome. Please come and meet our friendly community!
The dances are held at the Black Diamond Community Hall which is tucked into the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. Built in 1940 to host community gatherings and dances, the hall has been home to contradances for 40 years. The first contradance of the season is held in September; the last contradance of the season is held in June.
