In March the Port Townsend Gallery
Will Feature Artists
Nancy Fredrick and Sandy Tweed
Sandy Tweed recently settled in Port Townsend after several years of searching for a new community. Diving into her new life Sandy has prepared a sea themed collection of work for her first experience as a featured artist. “My paintings capture the up close and personal relationship with nature I have enjoyed since I was a child.” A self-taught acrylic painter Sandy’s work reflects her earlier experience with watercolor. Most rely on multiple layers of transparent glazes, often over a lightly textured background. These build dynamic colors and depth that can range from light and ethereal to bold and intense.
Three separate Corvid series (crows and ravens) have been painted over four years. Numerous other birds have also served as inspiration, most recently a stunning Great Blue Heron. She has also focused on other winged creatures such as butterflies and dragonflies. And of course there is Skelekoi.
Nancy Fredrick will be showing a series of paintings, drawings and prints from her favorite landscapes. The works in the current series of landscapes are completed in the studio from drawings, sketches, photographs and memory. She feels nurtured by spending time out in nature. Nancy is always looking for places to go where she only hears the sounds of wind in the trees, water flowing in a stream and of birds and animals. From Big Sur up the coasts of California and Oregon to Washington she has gathered images by sketching while exploring the coastal scenes. Included in this show are watercolors, acrylic and mixed media paintings as well as monotype and intaglio prints.
Nancy studied sculpture at Cabrillo College and UCSC. However, she put sculpture on the back burner for about 20 years to take up Bagpipes. Subsequently she began to develop painting, drawing, and printmaking as the vehicle for her artistic expression. To explore additional print techniques she joined the Corvidae Press to use etching presses for making intaglio and monotype prints.
The Port Townsend Gallery at 715 Water Street is open from 10 to 5 Sunday through Thursday, and Friday and Saturday 10 am to 6 pm. Please join the artists for the Gallery Walk from 5:30 to 8 pm on Saturday, March 5. For more Gallery information, phone (360) 379-8110 www.porttownsendgallery.com.
