Hi folks,

My name is Goh Lu Feng. You can call me from Lu Feng. I'm part of the
Students' Interest Group, linuxNUS.

I was chatting with Chandra and we are toying with the idea of getting
a Bar Camp going next year (less than a month away). Will 20 Jan 2007
(2nd saturday of the semester) be a good day?

Do advise on details that need to be taken care of.

Regards,

Lu Feng

Hi folks!

that is a good idea! Think december was too packed. I can get a
venue in town, big open room, and with refreshments. At ntuc center.
:) otherwise, smu or nus could be good too!

NTUC Centre sounds good! About the refreshments... Will NTUC sponsor 'em?

On a related note, lets ask the p&g/yahoo follks (from the digital
movement event) to sponsor the event!

It would be nice to have industry folks participating in the event. Seriously no one wants to listen to 20 amateur geeks like me :)

True. I'll check if the Yahoo folks can send some developers over.
Btw, Julius, a game developer from EA should be attending and
presenting!

Julius: welcome to the group! do email us about topics you'd like to
hear about and talk about and please bring your Wii along for the
event ;)

P.S: If you know someone who'll find this interesting, please do get
them on-board.

guys, is this going to be a very technical conference? or are we discussing technology/trends in general?

i love technology but unfortunately don't have the same feelings towards programming so if its going to be another discourse on programming, i think i'm gonna give it a miss.

chandra?

It will be technical for sure. We're looking at discussing topics like
Ruby on Rails, Django, .NET on Linux and so on. A fair amount of
programming WILL happen at the event. That said, the event will not be
focused only on programming.

General discussions/presentations on technology trends will happen
too. We'll talk about stuff like Pinko Marketing, the Cluetrain
manifesto, internet marketing in general, blogging, blogging trends,
gaming, PR and advertising within games and so on.

One final note: Creative programming is not about creating mundane,
repetitive outsource-able code. It is like creating a painting with
the right tools...an art. I believe Barcamps are about collaborative,
creative programming.

Hi Harish,

Yes, I am acutually a software engineer in a game company called
Electronic Arts Asia Pacific, which is based in Singapore.
We work on playstations, xbox and pc etc and deliver games for the
Asian market.

With regards to meetings, I do think that technical meetings will be a
bit on the boring side. Sharing of personal experiences seems more
interesting!

yup I know EA - who doesn't! :)

But people tell me that EA Singapore doesn't really do any game development here except for some localization/internationalization?

You can certainly do that. Tell us about what you work on at EA Singapore (whatever you're allowed to disclose to the public). But Barcamps have traditionally been about code. So when you share stuff, you're normally expected to dig into the technical bits and cool hacks (if any). For instance, instead of just showing pictures and demos of the games which EA Singapore had produced (I have seen people do this to a CS crowd and I think it is such a waste talking to a techie audience), you can tell us how the EA gaming engine pipeline looks like, any cool tricks that you do for performance on a particular game, yada yada :)

Hi there!

So you guys are into gaming? That's really cool! And I can tell you
that EA is a pretty cool place to work in if you guys are interested!

I am sure I cannot tell you guys about code and pipelines used in the
game building process, but I can sure share with you how cool the PS3,
Xbox360 devkits are;) (and of course how a jerk Sony is). In terms of
game design whatever, you are right that engineers (especially those
based in Singapore) don't really get to decide what goes into the game,
but you still get to build pipelines and codes that help the game
development:)

Let's talk more when we meet!
