Hi everybody - as a follow up to Jonathan's email about FashionCamp, I wanted to add a little more info and toss an idea our for votes.

For anyone who hasn't heard about FashionCamp, there's a group of folks (many of whom are previous BarCampNYC planners and are on this list :) ) that are putting together FashionCamp during NYC Fashion Week. I'm not personally involved with the project, but I know that they're trying to introduce the Barcamp methodologies to a very new audience, and it sounds interesting.

They're having some trouble rounding up sponsors since they're virtual unknowns in the space, and are running quite a bit short on budget.

I know we were left with a small surplus from BCNYC4. I'd personally still like to roll a chunk of that forward to our next event since early funding is the hardest, but it would also be nice to help FashionCamp get rolling.

Depending on how much we have in the bank, I'd like to float the idea of offering  $250 (they're currently $1000 short) - would anyone be opposed to us contributing that to FashionCamp to help them put the event on?

Yeas or nays?

Thanks!
-Eric

hi everyone
Thanks for the support...

As I've been reaching out to many of the non tech sector, fielding much of the initial questions the challenge is two fold, We're breaking into new territory .. as such  The very concept of Barcamp and tech terminology is a challenge!

We're pulling together fragments of an emerging landscape, I have faith that Fashioncamp will find it's space! This is The first barcamp That i may have to stand in line at the ladies room!

The general concern ... "is this my target and should we invest in this!" Taking the barcamp concept through the chain of command, is the challenge. many are attending to "report back" for next years event or have asked  for "post show" reports and "attendee profiles"

On the other hand ...

Barcamps are traditionally supported by attending  tech companies, I'm sensing the same hesitancy. I think the same question is underlying in the tech community. How does this apply to my business.

It is reflected in the number of tech companies signing up to attend and as such affect  the very source of support for barcamps!

We also need the tech community to attend and present... these are not just fashionista's these are entrepreneurs who are searching for answers on technology for their business.. as a fashion person having attended many Barcamps, I'm a bit concerned that some of the great web, business and creative apps that I use  won't be present1

I'll throw a +1 in here for $250, assuming the barcamp treasury has it to offer.

I'm in favor of supporting what Eric describes: ". . . they're trying

(Continuing earlier thought)

Hell, next year we could even be explicit about it-- we can say we are
raising money not just for BCNYC5 but to help support other camps
throughout the year.

We'd use bcnyc's visibility to raise awareness and support for the
other *camps.

Hmm!

I'll add something I suggested to Jon earlier, which is that in
exchange for the $250 he & the FC crew will try to raise that much for
BCNYC5 next year.

Facile, non?

On a side note, I really like how much we are continuing to
communicate and use this list to help out with other Camps long after
BCNYC4.

Very encouraging for the future!
